Too see slideshow click the arrow on the above image On Wednesday December 6 at the high school, John Jay watched Rye score 13 straight points to open a ten point second quarter lead. Still, John Jay fought back and closed to 20-17, but ultimately, Rye was too much for the young Wolf team.

John Jay Gets in the Win Column with 12-3 Victory over Fox Lane
After losing their first two games, John Jay fell behind Fox Lane 1-0 on Tuesday December 5 and then went down two men on the power play. But the way the game begins doesn’t necessarily signify how it will end, according to Coach John McKeon. “It’s all about staying composed, getting your feet wet and getting adjusted to the game speed,” the first year coach said, and his sentiment definitely proved true.

Somers Opens Season with Victory Over Eastchester
After Lindsay McCullough went glass to get the first points of the season on Friday December 9, visiting Eastchester scored nine straight. So the Tuskers obviously needed a reset. “We had to calm down, pull ourselves together and make sure we played good defense and rebounded the ball,” said Olivia Allegretti. The agenda laid out, the Tuskers delivered.

Somers Repeats as State Champs with 35-6 Victory
Photos courtesy of and with permission of Somers boarded the bus for the JMA Wireless Dome on Friday December 1 and defending their state title was on the itinerary. Not so impressed, Whitesboro got down the field on the opening possession, and Memphis Ferguson ran 18 yards into the end zone. Only problem for the pretenders, a holding flag darkened their skies, and negated the score. Nonetheless, Andrew Kapica took note for his team. “Now, we knew what it was like to see them score,” he said, and the unpleasant memory stuck.

New Look Wolves Open Basketball Season with a Win over North Salem
With no starters returning from last year’s team, the boys basketball team completely turned the page against North Salem on Wednesday, November 29. So being a little shaky at the start was not a surprise. A 41-35 lead with less than six minutes remaining was, though. Unfortunately, the game went to overtime, and momentum and a lack of experience didn’t bode well. But these new look Wolves missed the memo.

Somers Wrestling Kicks off Season with Four Way Match at Peekskill
On Thursday November 30, the Somers wrestling team traveled to Peekskill for a four way match versus Hen Hud, Peekskill and Mamaroneck. The coaches figuring out the pairings, the outcomes did not count toward team records. But the decisions did register individually and a win for Ryan Ball didn’t have him getting too far ahead of himself.

John Jay Girls Basketball falls 41-30 to Lakeland
The last time the John Jay Wolves faced the Lakeland Hornets, the girls pulled out a 55-44 first round sectional one win. A year later, the team roster has almost completely turned over, but a 10-9 second quarter game looked like a pretty good start for the young Wolves team. That is until inexperience caught up with the girls on Friday, December 1 at the Lakaland home court

Somers 21-7 Victory Over Niskayuna Sends Tuskers to Syracuse for Repeat
Photos and Video courtesy of and with permission of NYSPHSAA After falling behind 7-0 to Niskayuna in the state semifinals at Middletown High School, Somers had no offensive answer through the first period, and Coach Anthony DeMatteo refused to hide his displeasure as the team switched sides at period’s end. “They came out strong, and we were back on our heels,” he put words to his concern. But the urgency DeMatteo expressed did not fall on deaf ears.

Before an empty Contest Field on Thursday November 9, the John Jay faculty gathered for a coed game of flag football. Not seeking any attention, the ten players were just after a break in the action between seasons. But while there was a lot of laughter and good cheer, the contingent of mostly coaches actually lit it up.

Somers Upfront in 31-7 Victory over Averill
Video courtesy of and with permission of NYSPHSAA On Friday November 17, Somers faced Averill Park at Mahopac High School in the Regional Finals of the New York State Football Tournament, and Coach Anthony DeMatteo’s game plan didn’t go heavy on any sophisticated array of X’s and O’s. “We felt it was going to be physical, and we thought we could match that up with our guys upfront,” he said. A successful game plan that theTuskers didn’t wait to implement either.
