Revolutionary War Monument to Remember the Diversity of All Who Sacrificed in Crucial Local Battle
Picture a monument of a White American officer flanked in battle by an African American enlistee and a Native American sharpshooter, and the commemoration must come no earlier than the Korean War. Therefore, only revisionist history driven by the demands of excessive political correctness could place the scene before that time. So for someone to actually put up the statue would have to be seen as taking the rewrite to a whole other level. That said, Michael Kahn of Yorktown Heights has set such an initiative in motion and hopes to have that very Revolutionary War Monument in place at Downing Park in the near future. Nonetheless, he feels very secure in the historical accuracy and its intent to remember all who served—especially in this area.

What I Like About Somers, New York
Back in June 2013, Primrose Elementary School had every third grader put together an essay on "What I like about Somers, New York.” Blue suburban skies, ample fields of play and a close knit community, the literary types must have reveled in a day to show off their aptitude to put prose to paper. "I was not that excited," said Viktoria Barbarakis. "It was the end of the year so I didn't want to do it." But she didn't let the natural inclination to reach for summer get in the way of her inspiration and beat out 200 other students.

Somers High School Alumni Gather to Remember Beloved Gym Teacher
Back in 2006, longtime Somers Track Coach and Phys Ed Teacher Charles Gilberti lost a extended fight with cancer. He died at the age of 67 in Las Vegas. At the Lovell Street Bar and Grill, Somers alumni and colleagues came out to pay respects soon after. They did so in a manner befitting a Somers fixture that few ever addressed as Charles or Mr. Gilberti.

Hey Baby Continues to Rock Westchester
If you decide on a rockin' night out on a Friday Night with the Hey Baby band and notice a twirling disco ball above, don’t expect that these guys to pay it any heed. “We don’t conform to KC and The Sunshine Band. We’re true to the music,” says band manager and bassist, Skip Langworthy.

Byram Hills Baseball Takes Section One Title in 4-3 Thriller Versus Rye
After Byram Hills went 1, 2, 3 in the first inning of yesterday’s Section One, Class A Final at Provident Bank Park, Bobcat starter Frank Vesuvio came out blazing fastballs against first seeded Rye. But he found himself behind 3-1 in the count to leadoff hitter and starting pitcher Tim DeGraw. The advantage had DeGraw teeing off on Vesuvio’s heater, which found the gap in left-center for a double.

The Stephanie Crispinelli Softball Tournament Continues With a Purpose
On Sunday afternoon, Reis Park in Somers again played host to the Stephanie Crispinelli Softball Tournament and Fundraiser. Initiated seven years ago, the tournament remembers the 19-year-old’s tragic death in the Haiti earthquake and celebrates her efforts to bring education to developing countries in the Caribbean. At the same time, the annual event defies the logic in which others move on and leave the family to carry the pain and the cause by themselves, according to Nicole Crispinelli.

Mt. Kisco Immigrants Make America Their Story
Most of us are familiar with the anxiety and excitement of reaching adulthood, packing up the car and setting our sights on a new city. Often including a safety tether to parental stability, the risk is clearly softened. But imagine the unknown when you are crossing continents and no two-way ticket to a friendly money stream exists. Most immigrants know the story, and it’s all the more impressive when they eventually turn the tenuous beginnings into a successful business. Mt. Kisco is home to two such stories.

The leveling off must have had Fox Lane and their faithful feeling their hearts in their stomachs as the 47th minute came to a close at Yorktown High School. But Fox Lane Coach Chris Coughlin had his ticker in a much more secure place as the waning moments seemed to spell doom on a valiant effort against the Section One powerhouse.

Not So Smart as the Critics, I Still Love National Treasure
Call me stupid but I love National Treasure. So of course, I know the historically based action adventure has never been well received by the critics. But I haven't read the reviews until now, and finally realize how stupid I am.

Somers Football Coach Feels the Love After Losing House in Fire
Somers JV Football Coach Matthew Ridgeway lost all his and his daughter’s possessions last Tuesday. An accidental fire in the kitchen broke out and destroyed his home. Tallying the dollar value can certainly be calculated but expressing the totality of the loss in words is quite another thing. “It’s like getting your heart broken as you lose everything of sentimental value,” Ridgeway attempted to explain. His daughter’s tears especially tugs at his spirit. So for as much as the GoFundMe page begins his rebuild, the football team's efforts have also put the emotional fallout firmly on the mend.
