Pig in the Onion Patch
Pig is the last of the twelve Chinese zodiacs, coming in a self-contented and decided last. Pig barely even bothered to run the race held by the Jade Emperor in the beginning of time, so losing was an unexpected bonus. Whoops- I’ve told the story backwards again. Yet again, I began the tale of the Jade Emperor’s race to determine who would protect the year with my zodiac’s appearance- insolent, long awaited and shuffled in long after the Emperor has grown sick of waiting. That was then; it’s also now. Pig swaggers back to a divine footrace with a full stomach and a days’ worth of stories. Pig’s arrival begins a cycle, a mood- a vibe, one might say- lasting aeons. Nowadays pig ambles in to the meeting an hour late, split hoof carrying an iced coffee. A pastry crinkles at the end of the other hoof. Pig makes no excuse for living well.

Quar (What is it Good For?)
Today I did nothing. It was a good day. Before all this nothing, I used to love donating blood. Not just because my insides were exposed and headed off to unknown parts. Not only because some part of me would become part of someone else, either. The sweetest detail was that I could be at most 100 feet away from children with leukemia or another annihilating disease I’ve never seriously considered. I’d be that close to a child who has only ever lived my nightmare and get called a hero for sitting still for twenty minutes. Then, juice and snacks. Then I make another appointment to be so close to death remaining completely self-involved.

Pandora's Book
The man in the chair was scheduled to die by the end of the hour. His name was Earl Nyjack and he had tortured and murdered ten women, allegedly. He faced a nun, a cherry red landline telephone on a table behind her and a guard looking on from just above Sister Meredith’s right shoulder. His gaze took in the telephone, the guard and the only person sorry to see him die in the whole world, or at least this horrible room, all as one faraway backdrop.
