The Little Girl
Once there was a girl with blue eyes, dark brown hair and skin fair enough that she appeared almost white. She was beautiful in every sense of the word, and when asked what her name was, she simply smiled and said “Lily”, because that is what she has been known as since she was very little. She lived a solitary existence, tending to her father’s farm and spending her days in a meadow surrounded by wildflowers. Her favourite place to play is at the edge of the river, where it is shallow enough for her to wade knee-deep into the icy water, letting herself be carried along by waves until she reaches the far bank. It is here she likes to lie on her back, letting herself float in the water and staring up at the clouds until her father finds her. He often asks her if she wants something to drink, but she refuses, preferring instead to watch him tend the fields until he returns and leaves her to herself once more.

The Fashion Shop
A young couple had just entered the shop, each dressed in black suits and white shirts. Both were holding hands and laughing softly together. She was wearing a pale pink dress and he wore a dark blue coat. When he saw the door, he squeezed her hand lightly as if saying, “Be careful, darling, I don’t want you hurt.”

The Wise Man's Saying
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. For as to the value of riches to him so much the more can it be said of those who possess neither; for while we have riches without wives, what have we with wives? A man may say without vanity that he has his fortune, but this is not true. His fortune cannot compare to other men's fortunes, because there are none like him, nor can it give him any other than himself; therefore his life itself may be esteemed but small if he has no one to share it with. This was how the wise man of old observed, who had lived long enough to understand the ways of nature, and knew well enough that a man should seek his fortune by living alone.

A Girl's Christmas: Part 6
I’m brought back to reality when I hear someone knocking softly. I quickly wipe a few stray tears from my face and step out into the hallway. Mom’s standing in the doorway, watching me intently. “Are you alright dear? You were starting to look upset.”

A Girl's Christmas: Part 5
I walk down the hallway toward the entrance hall, pausing briefly outside of the doorframe and leaning forward to peer into the room. My parents are seated on the couch, facing each other across the coffee table, the remote control still clenched between their fingers. Their mouths are pressed tightly together, but I notice that they're smiling.
