The Story It was January 2004, the start of my second semester of my freshman year in high school. This particular school had an overcrowding problem, which meant that some classes were located in outbuildings and portable classrooms. Among them were all of the foreign languages the school offered (Spanish, French, Latin, German, and Russian), of which students were required to take two semesters’ worth of lessons in the same language to graduate.

Naughty and Nice
Christmas lights glimmer, bathing the room in an ethereal golden haze. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d attend a high society holiday fundraiser, yet here I am arm in arm with the love of my life. All eyes turn as we walk into the room, and my heart sinks like a stone. What am I doing here? These are all his friends! They don’t know me; they probably won’t like me. He, of all people, should know how awkward I am!

Truth or Consequences
(Content warning: mentions of bullying and violence) A new day dawns. As I’m sitting down to breakfast, I turn on my phone and open Facebook. I mindlessly scroll, and it’s not long until I see it. Some article about some celebrity being canceled for some transgression that happened some time ago. It’s the same thing every morning: the one-sided narrative, the half-truths, the cruel assumptions. If the article itself doesn’t get me riled up, the comments section does. It’s an endless wall of people condemning the article’s subject with death threats or other creative punishments that far outweigh the accusation itself. Or else, they condemn anyone who dares support the accused to the same.

Evolution of a Writer
All my life, I’ve told stories in some way. Before I could hold a crayon, I made up stories and told them in spoken form. Before I learned how to write, I told stories by drawing pictures. The earliest story I remember “writing” was at age four. It was about a little girl who got sent to timeout because she wouldn’t take a nap, told in a series of pictures because I didn’t know how to spell the words I wanted to use. Another story from around the same time was about a dog who got a tummy ache from eating trash. These early stories were simple, inspired by real-life experiences, and not particularly noteworthy. That would come later.

The Undesirables: chapter 1
I am a monster. Why, you ask. Maybe it’s my strange, frightening appearance. Then again, I was never much to look at, even before I became like this. Maybe it’s the lives I’ve taken or the countless others I’ve ruined. They all had it coming, of course. I may be a monster, but I’m not a mindless killer! Maybe it’s the simple fact that I couldn’t fit into societal norms, no matter how hard I tried. So what makes me a monster? I’ll tell you my story and let you decide.

My Literary Doppelganger
Books have been an important part of my life since I can remember. As a child with a disability, I had a fairly isolated upbringing, so I found the companionship I lacked in works of fiction. As such, the list of books that have influenced me is a long one!
