The Abandoned Cabin is Never Safe
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night a candle burned in the window. It was the kind of night where the trees looked menacing, where their branches looked like the slender, bony fingers of a witch’s hand in a fairy tale. The tips were claws, coming to scratch and snatch. Wind howled and rain sliced, the muddy forest floor was a trap to hold your ankles fast.

Death Fantasy *Working Fiction*
It’s been 100 years since I made the decision to become a cyborg. The world was different then. The Earth’s destruction was imminent, so an army of scientists and intellectuals from all disciplines became cyborgs in order to save the planet. We needed more time to continue our work to save the planet and the human race. Back then, the thought was to save the top brains in humanity, to increase our literal brain power and longevity. We were successful. We saved the earth and life was allowed to continue. Ironic now that the crisis to save humanity is over, I’m no longer strictly human. Ironic that we became cyborgs to buy more time, and now we have nothing but time.

Too Late (Dennis Hauck, 2015)
Too Late is a Neo Noir film directed by Dennis Hauck, released in 2015. The basic plot follows a detective through a broken timeline, searching for a girl from his past who needs his help. It contains all the classic tropes of a Film Noir: a morally questionable private eye, a seedy underworld, thugs, beautiful and dangerous women, a lost love from the past, and a highly stylized script full of borderline-cheesy one liners. Additionally, it was shot entirely on 35mm film. It was released to a slew of negative reviews, however, which is always the risk when dealing with noir. The age-old question remains - is noir a genre or a time period? Can Neo Noir capture the turmoil, distrust and darkness felt in the time of the war-torn 1940s - the heyday of Noir? Can it translate to our modern time without coming off as trite or too out of touch? I’d argue that Too Late takes a chance on itself as a good example of Neo Noir by acknowledging what made Noirs great in their glory days, and keeping the themes of film, time and memory at the forefront of the plot.

Omnipotent Owl
She lay in bed looking out of the window. It was late, very late. She was feeling... conflicted. Bad, and good. She felt bad for not feeling worse. What they were doing... they would surely be condemned by everyone else if they knew. But neither of them really ever followed the rules and both of them found emotions tedious.

Mystery Lake
It happened a year ago. Marissa had thought of it constantly, incessantly, every single day since. And yet, no matter how often she replayed the scene in her head, she hadn’t been able to make sense of it. At least, not “acceptable” sense. Not the kind of sense that logical society would believe as true. As possible. Until now, a year later, Marissa had been on her own when it came to the disappearance of her brother, Cedric.

The Joy A Dog Brings
My dad is such a suck when it comes to animals. This six foot two, burly man – a fireman and a welder – has the bloodiest of bleeding hearts. For example, he used to carry my parents’ first “child,” German Shepard puppy named Jack, in the pockets of his Barbour coat and go for walks. I’ve seen him nuzzled up to a stray kitten he named Purry Murray. It’s because of this otherwise traditional specimen of masculinity that we have adopted and/or rescued almost all of our beloved family dogs. Each one has been special and taught me their own unique lessons about life and more specifically, love.

Captain Blackthorpe
Captain’s Log, Day 45 at Sea: This storm has been raging for days. A bad omen, a storm sent straight from the anger of the gods. I fear we’ve been blown off course There’s no way to tell. Fifteen metre waves crash against the ship. The swells threaten us from all around like some smothering blanket. I tell the crew to remain steadfast and keep the promise of treasure beyond their wildest dreams in their black pirate hearts.

Signs of a Scorpio
Have you ever heard multiple people complaining about a day full of jerks and otherwise irritable people? All on the same day? It’s probably not a coincidence. Mercury is probably in retrograde. Mercury is the Planet of Communication and when it’s rotation appears to reverse, it tends to throw people off. There’s a reason that “the crazies” come out during Full Moons. Full Moons are a traditionally powerful time of release. The planets and the stars have an effect on you!
