Signs of a Scorpio

Astrology Connects Us

Have you ever heard multiple people complaining about a day full of jerks and otherwise irritable people? All on the same day? It’s probably not a coincidence. Mercury is probably in retrograde. Mercury is the Planet of Communication and when it’s rotation appears to reverse, it tends to throw people off. There’s a reason that “the crazies” come out during Full Moons. Full Moons are a traditionally powerful time of release. The planets and the stars have an effect on you!

The more I delve into astrology, the more similarities I find. For example, I can’t think of a single Scoprio I know that doesn’t know they are a Scorpio. Another is that many signs with Fire as their element don’t like swimming. Leos are big ideas people but often lack follow through. A lot of sets of twins are actually born under the sign of Gemini. I tend to have more friends from certain signs than others. I also believe that if you do not believe in astrology, then pragmatic, logical thinking is probably one of the traits of your sun sign.

I’m a Scorpio – a sign that often has a “bad” reputation as cruel, revenge-seeking and envious. A sign that comes with a hard shell and a sharp stinger. While it may be true that I wouldn’t recommend crossing anyone born under the Scorpio sign, we are also fiercely loyal, with passionate emotions and a soft side only those we trust get to see. I relate to these characteristics, and even more. I don’t think that I am the way I am without some influence from where the planets were aligned at my time of birth. In fact, I take comfort in it. I take pride in being a Scorpio.

What I don’t agree with is blaming your actions on your sun sign. Just because one of the traits of Scorpio is to have a barbed-tongue, doesn’t mean I can’t control that side of me. With a little more research, one would find that that would be a sign of an unevolved Scoprio. What do I mean by this? One of the planets (we have two) that Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, the Planet of Transformation. We are defined by stages of evolution. There are seven stages and they are as follows:

1. The Spider – the most base form, represented by selfishness

2. The Scorpion – usually a young Scorpio who hasn’t learned to control their temper

3. The Lizard – watchful, absorbing situations, less reactive than the Spider and Scorpion

4. The Serpent – doesn’t attack unless repeatedly provoked, or is protecting someone they care about. Symbolically, the Serpent sheds its younger skins to move through to the higher stages

5. The Wolf – loyal, strong, protective of their pack, still can pack a painful bite

6. The Eagle or Dove – defined by a maturity not previously seen, flies above the dramatic minutia of everyday life, but always watching and knowing

7. The Phoenix – the enlightened stage of a Scorpio. Spiritual, non-reactive, in control. Has been through all the baser forms of themselves to reach this point

I myself identify somewhere between the Wolf an Eagle stage. Once you really start exploring all the facets of astrology, it’s so much more than saying, “A Scorpio is jealous, vengeful, honest, loyal and secretive.” It represents a deeper part of ourselves that connects us to the Universe. Astrology provides a way to navigate a sometimes confusing and cold world and can provide a sense of community. It’s a way to belong to something much bigger than humanity while simultaneously gaining a sense of self.

If you want my brutally honest Scorpio opinion, I don’t believe in coincidence, and feel one is naïve if one doesn’t think the planets have an effect on them. That being said, horoscopes tend to be really good advice regardless, so it wouldn’t hurt anyone to read them now and again!
