Fair Girls and Grey Horses
When I saw the Coming of Age challenge on Vocal a few days ago I thought that this could be something I might be able sink my teeth into, but even after thinking about it for a while I found it difficult to come up with anything that I may be able to write about. As I lay awake at 3.45 a.m. this morning, however, it finally dawned on me, as memories from my childhood and memories of my late father came flooding back to me.

Armistice
1918. In the summer of early 1918, as a great war raged in Europe, and citizens of the Empire struggled with the sacrifices being made for the greater good, life on the shores of Thompson Lake went on, much as it had done for the hundred or so years since it had first begun.

Gold, Siler, Bronze and Rainbows
With the curtain now having drawn to a close on the celebration that has been the (somewhat delayed) 2020 Olympic Games, the feats of those athletes who identify as LGBTQ are being celebrated like never before in history. There have always been gay athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports, and won Olympic medals, but for the most part it wasn't until they had finished their careers before they would show their true selves to the world.

A Very Fine Line
Seventeen year-old Liam Prentice was nervous. Nervous like he had never been before. It wasn’t because of the scratch that he had put on his mother’s Ford at the shopping centre last night. Nor the tense phone call of that morning from his girlfriend, after he had left her stranded, following said shopping centre incident. It wasn’t even the job interview which had been arranged for that very afternoon at the local supermarket.

Their Own Words – A Better Man
Their Own Words – A Better Man (Part One) When I lie beneath a clear night sky, gazing up at a million stars, my mind often goes back to when I was a kid, when I was told that each one of those stars was someone who loved us and who was now watching over us.

Their Own Words - An Introduction
Their Own Words – An Introduction I recently found a quote on the Facebook page of a friend and fellow author which I felt should definitely be shared. Some of you may have seen this already, but for those who haven’t I think you will agree that it is very relevant in today’s world.

Holden Sheppard’s INVISIBLE BOYS
Every now and then I come across a novel which resonates so powerfully with me that it leaves me shaking by the time I finally reach The End. The first time this happened was when I was in high school and that book was Lord of the Flies. Now, more than forty years later, it has happened again, this time with an Australian novel with characters and settings and events which quite eerily mimic my own upbringing, along with that of so many young men who have grown up as gay in rural Australia.

What could I possibly say . . .
As someone who has been writing fiction on and off for twenty years or so (not professionally, of course) a question was posed to me recently by someone who has helped with editing a number of my stories, asking what I would talk about if I were to be asked to give a speech or write a column.
