Subsistent Lies
I sighed as I watched my brother grumble off to find Gabriella. We had just left our fathers chamber and once again he had yelled at Colin because he did not wish to take Gabriella’s hand. In a way I could understand Colin’s reasoning; I knew that he was mad because things weren’t going his way for once. Actually, it wasn’t going his well ever since the King’s tournament. I remembered how he reacted when I went to look for him:

Subsistent Lies
The morning had come for us to be presented at court and I was still reveling in my dance with Darius Harte. After waking up a very grumping Gabby and warning her of her grumpy visitor I went off to wake Zaria. I wanted all of us to be at the castle bright and early, but it was to no avail, Gabby made us late. To all of our surprises Gabby was late because she had went to pay off our debt. By the time that we had reached the castle, I almost fainted at the sight. I couldn’t believe all that was going on around me. There were so many colors, so many people I didn’t know how to take in the whole sight. When we had finally found our place I finally whispered, “All of this for us?”

Subsistent Lies
Leaving the stable I had no idea where I was headed, all I knew was I had to figure out a way to stop my future husband from doing something he would live to regret or worse wouldn’t. It was no big secret that all the nobility in Anevia detested the Gulliver’s, and none of the knights or nobles at this tourney would pass up the chance to embarrass a Gulliver even if it meant killing one in the process. I thought of going to Zaria for help when I saw her, but thought against it; after what took place yesterday in the parlor me and my sisters were not on good terms. Remembering this I kept walking. My next thought was to go ask mami for help, but then remembered I had no clue where she had went. Even if I did find her, she would be too happy about Colin’s declaration to ask for my hand, that she wouldn’t care that her future son-in-law might not be able to give her grandchildren if he entered the tourney. I stopped walking and sat on a bench. I was at a lost as to what to do and I didn’t have anyone to turn to; everyone was either mad at me (Izzy), not talking to me (Zaria), or preoccupied with their own plans for me (Mami). If papi were still alive, none of this would be happening, but he wasn’t and there was no one to blame except for me, poor outcast Gabby. “ A lady with beauty such as yours shouldn’t be so sullen. You should be enjoying the festivities.” A voice said off to my right.

King Arthur’s ball was a big success, everyone who had been at the tourney showed up to the ball dressed in their finest. I had every reason to believe half the success belonged to the King’s guest of honor. Part of my reason in showing up tonight was to learn more about the guest of honor myself and to finish striking a deal with King Arthur that King Vincenzio would be proud of. I still had not been able to change Arthur’s mind about sharing Valence with my King. “Your grace I really must talk to you about Valence.” I said as Arthur took a goblet of wine.

Subsistent Lies
It was the morning after the ball and out of the three of us, Isabella was looking the most giddy about going to be presented at court. She had even had the courage to come wake me early in the morning knowing fair well I liked to sleep in till noon unless I had something of importance planned. It was apparent that she had been taken with one of the gentlemen at the ball and was hoping that they would become one of her suitors. “Aren’t you ready yet Gabby?” Izzy said sitting on my bed.

Subsistent Lies
The courting season was here and I was in Anevia, acting as Ambassador for my King. I would have preferred to be in Vespar where I was close to tracking down where my family’s murderers were, but I had a duty to my King. King Vincenzio had his mind set on having Valence returned back to his rule and he thought I was the best man for the job, so here I was at Anevia’s annual tourney where I was doing my best to have King Arthur relinquish that land into my King’s hands. So far, I was getting nowhere, at least, not to the liking of my King. King Arthur said if Vincenzio wanted Valence, he would have to share the land with him. This meant Vincenzio would either have to marry his daughter to the Count that lived there or his ward, Constance. From my view, this was fair and a good deal for my King since the land bordered both kingdoms and since Valence was rightfully Arthur’s. Only problem was Vincenzio wanted the land all to himself, he didn’t want to share what he believes was his, which I could understand; ten years ago one of Vincenzio’s most trusted knights sold Valence to Arthur as revenge for sleeping with his wife, which at the time Vincenzio thought she was just a courtesan. After selling the land the knight switched sides and settled somewhere in Anevia; before Vincenzio could track him down, apologize, and get his land back before the claim was exchanged for the money, the deal had been finalized and the knight had died. So much tragedy had happened to Vespar during the last ten years that it’s ashamed that we were still trying to fix them in the present.

I had to admit as I was in front of the King next to Calib I thought that I would surely get caught, especially when the Ambassador of Vespar sat there studying us. When we had came back to our side of the field Calib took off his helmet and dismounted. The fighting hadn’t even started and he was already sweating. I was sweating too, but I had every right to be; I was risking my neck by disguising myself as a knight. “As you all know tag team battles are fought in two segments. The first segment will consist of jousting and the second segment will consist of swordplay and wrestling. Each opponent will compete in only one of the two segments. However, who shall ever win the jousting segment may compete in the swordplay and wrestling should their partner lose. Now let the match commence!” The King yelled taking his seat again and grabbing a goblet of wine to toast the match.

Subsistent Lies
I watched as Lady Gabriella and what seemed to be her sisters arrived. The lady seemed to be very intrigued with all that was going on, and had talked to the King like he was an old friend. I shook my head and walked to find Blaine. I never thought that I would be bested by a lady but the day came and I still was trying to recover from the shock. My anger before came only because I thought she was Colin, but when a lady was revealed, I didn’t know whether to curse the gods or laugh until there was no more in me to laugh at. I had won the rest of my fights this day and the fact that I lost one didn’t do much to my pride. It was an honor to me that I had finally found someone who could compare to my fighting skills as much as this lady could. I knew, however, that Blaine felt another way. He was quite embarrassed and grew with more anger at the fact that his skills had been bested with a lady. I walked toward him now as he sipped his wine, looking over at Lady Gabriella. “Smile my brother. You act as though the gods have cursed you on this fine day.”
