The kitchen’s ancient and huge cuckoo clock ticked loudly above the dark wooden stove’s mantle; deep in thought, Lord Der Ärzte tapped at his lip in rhythm with the monstrous timepiece. The parcel in his hand had been carefully re-wrapped so its contents could not contaminate the kitchen.

“Harold, a dirty little oik is ringing our front doorbell. Kindly set the dogs onto ‘em!” Lady Der- Ärzte’s upper-class accent rang out around the afternoon lounging room, as unappealing in its tone as a Saint Bernard’s fart is in its bouquet.

“Daddy?” my four-year-old daughter tugged insistently at my elbow. “Yes, love?” “Can Philly stay for dinner?” The prep work for our evening meal was not going the way I had expected. Katie, my wife, was much better at making lasagne than me. Frankly, even using the term lasagne near this gloopy spaghetti mess stretched its description too far.

It’s not often that someone wakes up to find themselves falling through the sky and have no clue as to why. Even as it’s happening, you can’t believe your eyes. As every piece of your being is pulled and tugged at by cold, whipping air, you don’t care though, because you’re concentrating solely on the ground rushing up to meet you.
