The Day I Hit Back
Once upon a time, I hit a man He wasn't someone I knew. He was unarmed, unintimidating, and sitting down, while I was standing up. There were lots of other people around, and I didn't feel I was in any physical danger. So why did I, an avowedly non-violent, non-confrontational person, backhand this guy?

Think Ageism Isn't Your Problem?Top Story - January 2022
Ageism is the last “ism” to be recognized In our culture — not just North America, but a whole lot of the developed world — ageism is so ingrained that it’s easy to miss. We’re so used to it that we don’t even see it when it’s right there in front of us.

The Trip to the Infinite
A few months ago, one of my best friends introduced me to an organization called End Well. A non-profit foundation, it was founded in 2017 by Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider, who hosts the TED Health Podcast and is a frequent medical contributor on CNN, MSNBC, and CBS News. She’s a doctor of internal medicine who, after seeing so many patients suffer great physical and emotional pain as they died in a hospital surrounded by strangers, figured there had to be a better way.

Every Day's a Party on My BlockThird Place in Life Unleashed Challenge
There’s an unofficial dog park on our block It’s really just a large lawn, mostly flat but sloping gently toward the middle, originally put there by the developers as an aesthetic way to handle drainage. It’s bounded by streets on two sides, by an alley on one, and by an expanse of cattail-studded brush on the other, the haven of red-tailed blackbirds and white-tailed deer that stretches between the outskirts of our neighborhood and the river.

What Americans Still Agree On
Months back, I vowed to stop writing about politics But that doesn’t mean I won’t write about democracy, or about what it means to be an American in these critical days. Especially having just passed the first anniversary of January 6, 2021 — a day that I believe ranks with 9/11 in terms of existential threat to the nation — the state of our Union is a topic that is with me, waking and sleeping. I find myself ricocheting, feeling hopeful and resolved one moment, frightened yet resigned the next. I know I’m not alone in this.

Can We Please Just Get Along?
Does everything really have to be so tense? Here's a scenario that should be completely innocuous: we had our kitchen cabinets painted this week. The painting contractor, a very nice man whose services we’d used several years ago, gave us an estimate that made our eyes pop, but that’s what good work costs these days. And his guys were good. They showed up on time, pretty much, every day, and did their work with care and skill. They treated us, our possessions, and our house with respect.
