Fate
If you listen carefully, you can hear the whispers of Fate. Those were the words Ernas used to tell me. They were meant as an encouragement — I could do it if I only kept trying — but I took them as chastisement then. I wasn’t trying hard enough. I needed to do more.

The VoyageTop Story - November 2023
The ocean water splashed violently over the side of the ship, and lightning cracked the sky with endless whips of thunder. It was the fourth day of the journey, the last two consisted of a storm only Thor could muster. It was as if Odin had cursed them to perish at sea. Were they making a mistake traveling to conquer this new land? Yrsa thought to herself, but immediately banished it. No, I believe this is my purpose! she encouraged herself silently, as she slumped into the soaking wood. Looking up at the sky, full of shimmering stars, she knew Thor was showing his excitement for their journey.

Fae Rights
I remember my mother’s face as they tore her wings off. Iridescent wings fluttered in resistance as they were torn from her flesh. Her face was twisted in agony, lips peeled back from grinding teeth, eyes squinted as fresh tears rippled down her cheeks. The tool they used glowed sapphire and hummed with energy as it cauterized her wounds, and healed almost instantly what would have been horrific scars down her back. Once the gruesome act was finished, my mother’s tear-streaked face turned from agony to joy as she looked at the man she had just married. Her eyes still leaked opal-like tears and glimmered with love. That’s why she allowed this to happen. I knew that day I would never let my wings be taken, my ability to fly be taken, not even for love.

Court of Sorcerers — Part 3
For once, Elyscia was conflicted about her plan. They needed the Duke on their side, but she wouldn’t allow him to destroy her life’s work. They would have to move up the plan. She could call off the engagement, as soon as they accomplished what they set out to do. She told Renout as much.

Court of Sorcerers — Part 2
Renout found a seat at the back of the Council meeting, in the area designated for the court magicians. They were expected to attend the meetings, in case their work was needed, but not to give input unless asked. He had arrived early and quickly poured himself a goblet of wine before emptying a vial of Elyscia’s magic into the pitcher.

Court of Sorcerers
Elyscia rolled off the plush bed, donned a robe, and poured herself a goblet of water. After she had gulped down half the contents, she offered Nicolaus the rest. He took the goblet from her hand, but before he could take a sip, she gestured to stop him.

The Scraping
There it was again. The scraping noise I heard every night for the last six months. It was like clockwork. It woke me when the moon was high in the sky, her rays of moonlight kissing my cheek in comfort. I already knew what was waiting for me if I peeked under my bed; eyes. Nocturnal eyes, glowing in the darkness. Just enough moonlight to show gangly limbs, bones pushing against dark glistening skin. Long talons stretch from lengthy fingers, gently scraping against the dark wood wall. Its eyes, always locking with my own.

The Council - Part 3
The full moon was high in the sky, her light different this night as if she was smiling down on our efforts to rid ourselves of this nightmare. I glanced at Dierck, his eyes read a mix of anxiousness and excitement. Soon we would make our move, soon our fates would be decided. My thoughts drifted to Dametria. I hoped she was okay, and that our move to strike would not cost her life.

The Council - Part 2
The next night, I walked to my coven meeting as the full moon rises in the sky. I traveled to the center of town, where a large bonfire crackled. Many witches stand around it shuffling their feet, hands raised toward the flames to keep them warm. No one spoke. I didn’t dare glance toward Dierck or the other Resistance members from our town. Even when the Council isn’t watching, any number of witches would sometimes report on their own coven, just to gain favor with the Council. When everyone has arrived, each coven gathered in a circle. Twelve witches plus the High Sorceress, or Sorcerer in the case of Dierck’s coven, at the head.

The Council
“The Council has decreed. And so it shall be.” Those were the last words that my mother ever heard. And I have to hear them every day. Not just hear them, but recite the latter half of the phrase, “and so it shall be,” like a prayer. To refuse would mean my head too. They don’t just punish you for the words you say anymore but for the ones you don’t say.

The Magic of Onyx
I was walking home from work, kicking rocks with my worn-out boots, dreading the rest of the night. I enjoy Halloween enough, but I was at the weird age when I couldn’t get away with Trick-Or-Treating anymore, and I was too young to go downtown for extravagant Halloween parties. Deep in my self-loathing, I stumbled across a few young boys messing with something. Soon after my realization I heard squealing.
