CULTure War
Introduction There were many times in my life where something deep inside impelled me to consider leaving everything behind to become nothing. In some cases, this came in the form of the simple desire to wander aimlessly with no care or concern about whither I went. Other times, it was suicidal despair which led me to not only stare into the abyss but left me with one foot hovering over its depths.

No Corona, No Lime... Only Lemons
12-6-2020 My father died yesterday. Because of the quarantine measures taken on account of the COVID-19 scare, he died in the hospital with no one there to hold his hand. His wife, Barb, had promised to be there. She was torn apart by the realization that she was not able to keep her word. We knew he was approaching his end. He knew best of all. The night before, he called his brothers and sisters to tell them the end was approaching—to say goodbye. We had thought we would be able to get him home before the end, but he didn't make it. I got the call from Barb around seven in the morning. Weeping, she told me he was gone.

Split Second: A Review
Movies were a huge part of my childhood. I grew up in the 1980s, when cable television and video first surfaced in popular culture, so I rented, bought, and watched a lot of movies at home. I was a horror enthusiast but being an only child and a latchkey kid with a predisposition toward solitude, I would watch anything just to pass the time. Yet there were many movies that I wanted to see but never got around to checking out.

Life in Hades with My Oldest Daughter
In 2004 I was blessed with the first of my three children. In a way, we grew into the burgeoning new age of gaming together. I came of age in the 80s and 90s, wiling away my time first with an Atari 2600 Mom bought at a yard sale, and then moving onto the many classic Nintendo titles that still resonate with so many. By the time my daughter Phoenix was born, I was immersed in games that would have looked like Science Fiction to me at age 8 but were increasingly becoming commonplace in gaming culture. Diablo II and Morrowind were the best of the best to me at the time, and Phoenix would go on to enjoy the Elder Scrolls series just as much.

Learned Helplessness
I wrote this essay during a time when I was going through something extremely difficult which is way more common than people think and which many people still yet do not recognize as a societal problem. It’s been many years and I am still working through it, so for the sake of certain individuals who I love very much I cannot go into specifics about it, as it may adversely affect them if I am too candid. I can only point out that things are not always as they appear, and hope that these words will suffice as a general reminder that all who wander are not lost.

Trolley Problems
Hermann stood at his window, looking out on the city. A billboard right outside his apartment building advertised the incumbent President of the United States. It was an election year. Half the voting population hated the guy, half loved him. Hermann hated him and his opposition. All politicians were terrible, disgusting, pandering, lying, cheating, stealing filth in his eyes, but what was an independent to do but vote the lesser evil? Yet, this year there was no lesser evil, just pure shit. Pure shit, and Hermann was sad for the declining state of democracy.

Christmas Music is Chinese Water Torture for the Soul
How many versions of John Lennon’s Happy Xmas (War Is Over) have to be recorded before war is actually over? I don’t know, but while John rolls over in his grave, artists will keep milking the song for Christmas cash, come hell, high water or… war.
