A Clear Line of Sight
“Such a disappointment,” Davy whispered to himself as he stepped off of the gangplank and onto the drifting dock. He wore an itchy 3-piece navy lounge suit, the first time he’d worn it in months. He wrapped himself tighter in the tan trench coat, as the chill in the air roared through the potent north-westerly wind coming off the English Channel. He turned and looked up and high, pulling the brim of the bowler hat down to take the edge off the sun rising to his left. “All that work. All that time.”

Divas
So, the Italians derived a term, the title “prima donna,” in the late 17th century. It was a term used to refer to the premier, most talented opera singer in an opera company. Typically, this was a female soprano, the best of the best. From this title, two centuries later, the term “diva” was born. Diva is an Italian term for a female deity, or a “goddess”, and the implication was that these prima donnas were so talented and so popular that they were goddesses compared to other singers in the opera company. It was a supreme compliment.

Baby Carriers and the Wing-T
I’m sitting in the front lobby of Carolina Forest High School near Myrtle Beach, SC. They were looking for a new head football coach, and (inexplicably) they called me for an interview. I was amazed, as my resume was not that deep at that point. It was 2013, and at that point, I had been an assistant coach for five years and an offensive coordinator for one. I had some head coaching experience with Varsity Wrestling, and my one year as an O.C. was a doozy (we won eleven games and played for a state championship), but other than that, my experience was not great enough to give me consideration for this, a gigantic school in the top division of our state (even if their program was down). Yet, here I was, ready to interview for the biggest opportunity of my life, hoping for the best.

Two in the morning. I’m in my gaming chair, controller in-hand. I want to sleep, but that ain’t happening. Haven’t managed more than a twenty minute power nap in the past six days. Cold, discarded half-filled bins of Chinese food grew stale on the dinner table in the nook near the kitchen in the small, 2-bedroom apartment.
