You are my Mr. Rock.
The only way to plausibly imagine telling the story of my dad is by telling you a story about my dad. Just one. In this single story, you’ll know everything there is to know about this man. I can start by saying he’s a real stand up guy with a firm handshake and a loving heart. But that collateral is better suited for when I design Mahogany Hallmark card greetings.

What in Your Opinion is Strength
"What in your opinion is strength?" This was a random journal prompt my friend and I stumbled upon during our monthly writing meetup sessions. Typically, we get together and plug away at individual projects. This time, we decided to collectively create by responding to a journal prompt. This was a great way to get things out and explore the deep recesses of our mind to understand how we are defining strength.

It's Hard Being Easy Going
This is to all the girls who are hard not to love but easy to despise- welcome to the first forum for us. Thinking back on all your interactions, the firmest memories you have are seeing the unique ways people have swung on their heels to turn their backs on you. It’s a collection of moves that aren’t quite ballet, but not in the full swing of jazz.

Personal Prisons Seem Preposterous
The prisons we put ourselves in are the most painful of all. It’s possible to live in paradise and still inhabit a grimy, grueling existence every time you open your eyes. This imaginary maximum security federal corrections facility is easily the reality of the majority of the population.

I Got A Lot of Healing to Do Before I Die
Much like Curtis… If you already have grasped the concept of this post, then you are my age and can relate to everything else I’m about to write. When I was a kid, listening to Wanksta made no sense to me. The song was catchy because it flowed like a nursery rhyme. As a kid who loves hip hop, you especially love the songs that are super easy to grasp the tune to. 50 Cent, as a middle schooler, was our hero. He emulated strength and resilience by just being big as hell and shot a million times. His songs didn’t have to make much sense because the sheer essence of him had us all sold. Now, that I’ve had upwards of 12 years to process his songs, one record in particular has been swirling around my head. The smash hit, “Wanksta” was a letter to his haters.

A Letter to My Daughter
Today, in meditation/yoga, I realized the power that a mother-daughter relationship has on the history of an entire family tree. Hurt daughters turn into hurt mothers. So ladies, heal yourselves. It’s a long, scary journey but for the sake of your daughter, you have to do it. The women in my family hail from women who ingrained negativity in their hearts. You can see the urge to resist the message tracks that have been laid since the days of slavery. You’re pretty, you’re light skinned, you’re a dancer, you’re better than them. When in essence, no one is better than anyone else.

Tonight I Release...
Tonight, I wrote a letter to the full moon. Me and the moon have a special connection. Sometimes, I get out of touch with the moons gravitational pull then I remember my fathers almanac. The pages of the wacky little book tell you everything as it relates to the moon’s perfect timing. My dad mainly uses it for hunting. However, anyone who is interested can grab a copy and use it for anything. Measure how deep your soil needs to be for planting. Understand the best time to mate your hogs or track a particular animals movement.

Lessons from the Porcelain Throne
The animals have so much to teach us about how simple and free flowing life is. I sat and watched a colony of sugar ants flow through my resort bathroom at 5:30am. More specifically, from the shitter. What I noticed was they stop and dap each other up along the way. The ants traveling north bump, seemingly purposefully into the ants traveling south. This looked almost like middle school, speaking to friends in the hallway. I went to a very real and raw middle school that more and more is similar to prison. I’m still trying to process the fact that it’s quite possible that I spent three years in a prison-like environment, but I digress.

Two Ways to Touch Your Nose
Much like there are so many ways to skin a cat, there are a variety of ways to touch your nose. I am thankful for the people that teach me that touching my nose can work by putting my hand directly up to my face. I live a life where touching my nose was done using a backwards method of wrapping my arm around my neck to then graze the side of my nose with the inch of my remaining wingspan.

Baby Ghosts & Barn Owls
Precious children can see things we can’t and we can understand things they can’t tell us. What’s the use of being a storyteller if not to share the stories that ghosts pass along to children who can’t quite yet talk. Every being deserves to have their story told so here I am writing on behalf of a ghost.
