The Barn In Orient Point
My kids and I lived in an old farmhouse at the tip of the North Fork of Long Island in Orient Point through most of the late 1960s and 70s. The farmhouse had been part of a large working farm, the land later sold off to a developer who never developed it. I ended up with about two acres consisting of the main house, a large old barn behind which the locals informed me were the old slave quarters. Yes, farmers on Long Island had once owned slaves to work their bountiful farms. The slave quarters had nothing left but three wooden shacks, no visible amenities or even remnants of a fireplace to warm a human being in the fierce freezing winds of winter blowing off Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay. I couldn’t imagine the suffering of those days.

The Pet
Ever since the heat wave followed the final melting of the ice caps in 3462, the weather had never been the same. Temporal and meteorological oddities had sprung up all over the planet and life drastically changed from the reports found in the archives. Some things remained the same, and the need for companionship was one of few constants.

Poodle Power
The Grand Tour . . . and a Puppy It was 1957, Europe was still recovering from the devastation of World War II, when my husband and I took a delayed honeymoon to Europe. We were on the “Grand Tour” as it was called in those days. We boarded the Queen Elizabeth in New York City, disembarked in Le Havre and visited Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and Turkey. Our last stop was to be Paris, the plan - to bring home a French Poodle puppy.

Wingman Batman Makes Introduction to Superman
December 1959 Superman and a Nose Dance I’m twenty-one, divorced and living in Manhattan. Just off Sutton Place on 55th Street. Great address and high rent. I’m determined to go to law school, but at the moment I’m an NYU undergrad. The last semester before Law School. I hope. To cover rent and food I work nights and go to school full time during the day. Not too many places to work nights. Hooker? Nah! Night watchwoman? Nah! All night disk jocky? Not a sultry enough voice. I’m the hatcheck girl at Gatsby’s, a chi-chi supper club on the corner of 49th Street and First Avenue. I can do homework in the check room between customers and as staff eat a good free dinner.

The Maiden of Race Rock
The Maiden Of Race Rock Gulls work the schools of baitfish sparkling the surface of Long Island Sound. Fishermen cast their weighted lines into the rip-rap demarcating the spot where the Sound disappears into the Atlantic Ocean. October is the best month for bluefish. They like the cooler water, the rougher seas and the baitfish swarming the surface as they make their way south.

Liars
When I was a kid, maybe only four or five years old, my mother taught me the difference between truth and lies. To begin with, lies got me punished. My first lie had to do with something I broke. I still vividly remember Mom screaming on discovery of this broken object.
