Unveiling Authorship: A Guide to Discerning AI Text Creation

The arena of artificial intelligence is currently ablaze with competition. In the latter part of 2022, Open AI's Chat GPT took the spotlight, providing a glimpse into the potential future of search engines. ChatGPT, short for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer," is no ordinary chatbot. It possesses the capability to process inquiries and deliver pertinent information on a vast array of subjects, spanning from historical events to culinary recipes and even automotive specifications. What sets ChatGPT apart is its ability to understand and respond to inquiries in plain, everyday English, liberating users from the need to craft queries like "how to prevent canine defecation on Reddit." The result is akin to a conversational search box, a significant leap beyond the rudimentary Google search. Notably, Microsoft, the entity behind Bing and a major investor in Open AI, is in favor of this technological advancement.

ChatGPT, including the recently unveiled GPT-4, offers comprehensive responses; it can even compose computer code, craft cover letters, and tackle legal exams. However, it's not without its flaws, sometimes providing answers that are outright incorrect. The unwavering confidence with which ChatGPT presents erroneous information has led to debate in newsrooms and academia. While some educators have embraced this innovation, others remain skeptical.

The enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence is undoubtedly genuine, although it is not universally shared. Educators and hiring professionals, in particular, are wary of distinguishing human-generated content from chatbot dialogues. Industry experts are equally concerned about the potential surge in misinformation and have issued an open letter cautioning against the risk of AI inundating our information channels with propaganda and falsehoods. Those who have endorsed this letter argue that decisions of this nature should not be entrusted to unelected technology leaders. Mozilla aims to confront such challenges through the Responsible Computing Challenge, promoting the incorporation of technology's political and societal implications into higher education curricula. Additionally, Mozilla.ai, a startup committed to facilitating the development of open-source and ethical AI, seeks to contribute to this endeavor.

As we step into this uncharted territory, where even a casual message from a friend on Snapchat could be the work of AI, it becomes imperative to grasp the capabilities and limitations of chatbots. Can you distinguish text written by AI from that of a human? Can you ascertain whether your colleague's response is genuinely theirs or crafted by ChatGPT? Are you equipped to identify misinformation within chatbot-generated responses, considering that ChatGPT-influenced Bing still occasionally falters? Detecting AI-authored content is not always straightforward, but there are strategies you can employ to enhance your discernment.

Identifying ChatGPT Text - A Manual Approach

You have the option of employing online tools, such as the OpenAI API Key, to identify text produced by ChatGPT. It's noteworthy that this tool is not infallible. OpenAI suggests that it requires a minimum of 1,000 words to effectively detect AI-generated content, meaning shorter AI-generated text messages might escape its scrutiny. Moreover, even with a sufficient word count, it may not consistently distinguish between AI and human-generated language. AI-generated text that has been edited by a human can also elude detection.

(Update: As of July 2023, a new ChatGPT update no longer utilizes the AI classifier previously employed by OpenAI for text detection. The company claims to be developing more reliable methods for detecting AI-generated text, as well as AI-generated audio and video content.)

OpenAI's tool, while useful, is not the sole offering in the realm of ChatGPT text identification. The Medium blog "Geek Culture" highlights alternative options developed by researchers at Princeton and Stanford. If it is critical to definitively determine whether text is machine or human-authored, employing multiple tools for verification may yield more reliable results. The landscape of ChatGPT is evolving rapidly, so outcomes may vary accordingly.

Caveats of Detecting ChatGPT Text

It's important to underscore that no technique for identifying AI-generated text is infallible, even when using presently available tools. Jesse McCrosky, a data scientist at the Mozilla Foundation, cautions against the limitations of text detection tools. McCrosky argues, "Detector tools will always be imperfect, rendering them virtually useless for most applications. It would be unjust to accuse a student of employing AI to draft their essay based on a tool that you know has a 10% chance of producing a false positive."

According to McCrosky, achieving a foolproof AI detector may be an impossible feat because software can continually generate "undetectable" text or produce content designed to evade these detection mechanisms. Moreover, the AI tools at our disposal are in a constant state of improvement. McCrosky observes, "There may be an ongoing 'arms race' between ChatGPT text detectors and those attempting to evade detection, but there will never be a situation in which detectors can be entirely relied upon."

Identifying Misinformation Within ChatGPT

It is no secret that ChatGPT has, on occasion, disseminated misinformation and disinformation. Microsoft has taken measures to mitigate this by employing tools such as those from NewsGuard to limit the dissemination of inaccurate responses by its AI. Nevertheless, the issue remains a cause for concern. The Poynter Institute offers valuable guidelines for recognizing misinformation within ChatGPT: 1) scrutinize for recurring patterns and incongruities, 2) be vigilant for indications of human error and assess the contextual relevance. If a ChatGPT response reiterates information excessively, exhibits peculiar errors uncharacteristic of human composition, or provides content that lacks contextual coherence, you may be encountering misleading content. Always cross-reference the source links provided in your ChatGPT responses and conduct independent research beyond ChatGPT's input. Treat it as an initial reference rather than the definitive authority.

ChatGPT: A Source of Enjoyment, Yet a Cautionary Tale

ChatGPT offers a captivating glimpse into a world brimming with AI-generated responses, but it also serves as a cautionary reminder of the potential drawbacks. With great intelligence comes great responsibility. As Bing, ChatGPT, and other AI entities strive to become more proficient chatbots, users must remain vigilant. The use of ChatGPT detection tools is vital to confirm the authenticity of the content we encounter, ensuring that what we read is of human origin and the facts presented are indeed accurate.

I've just run a few pieces from vocal through that detector - two of the four I chose were believed to be AI. I feel somewhat underequipped!
