As a child, I remember starting a few stories only to end up not finishing them for whatever reason. It was only when I became an adult that I consistently began to end my stories. However, there is one story that I wrote from my childhood that I was able to finish. It was a very short story, a children’s book in all honesty, but a finished written piece nevertheless.

If I recall, the title of it was called The Super Duper Scarer, or something along those lines. It was about a young girl who loved to scare her family. And by scaring, I mean the girl would jump out from behind the corner or the couch and yell at her unsuspecting family members. It got to the point that her family all got together and successfully scared her together. My children’s book ended with the family all happily scaring each other from then on.

As for why I wrote this story, my father one day said that he wanted me to write a book and my older sister to illustrate it. As for why, I can only guess he wanted us to be productive and help us fulfill our dreams early since I wanted to be an author and my sister wanted to be an illustrator. I was actually excited about it and managed to write it rather quickly I think. At least, the story itself only took up about two small pages (imagine pages from a small notebook), and part of the space was taken up by small pictures by yours truly. I guess I thought my sister could use those for reference. However, that was as far as the project went. My father never brought it up again and I doubt my sister even drew the pictures. The story is just a memory now, but admittedly a nice one.

My writing style is definitely different now, since not only has my grammar improved (at least, I hope it has), but my stories have gotten more complex. Granted, The Super Duper Scarer was meant to be a children’s book, but my other pieces from my childhood were also simple. I didn’t really delve into the description of the scenery or into the character’s emotions for example. I also write in the third person for my stories when before, I mixed it up. My themes are a bit deeper than as a child since now that I’ve grown up, I know that life is complicated sometimes.

Looking back now, I am glad that my father had me write that story. For a journey that has been full of ups and downs with hopefully no end in sight, that was a good beginning.

That's great your father was so supportive of yours and your sister's ambitions! and it sounds like a sweet story you wrote, it's always fun to see different examples of healthy family dynamics.
