3 Benefits of an Online Writing Community

Writing can be lonely.

Think about it. Writers spend hours on end locked away in their writing space thinking up all of these characters, situations, friendships that all go on magnificent adventures, and relationships where they all get to live happily ever after - but while all this is going on they can sometimes neglect to form these attachments or go on adventures for themselves.

While there's nothing wrong with writing these stories locked away with nothing but us and our writing, the benefits of finding an online (or in-person) writing community far outweigh the cost of stepping away from our manuscript for an hour or two.

So what benefits are there to finding a writing community?

Support and Encouragement

If I had only ever listened to those in my immediate circle when it came to writing - you wouldn't be reading this article.

While I would love to say that my parents, my close friends, and even my partner were supportive of my decision to follow the career path of a writer - I would be lying to you, except for my partner who would support me even if I wanted to join the circus.

The sense of support and encouragement is one of the most significant advantages of joining an online writing community. Whether seeking advice for a writing-related topic or seeking advice about the writing life in general, there will never be anyone else who will understand what you need quite like other writers.

Accountability and Motivation

My writing community is one of the most encouraging parts of my life - when they are not being a pain in the butt, but it comes from a place of true love and support.

When one of us announces that our work will be ready and heading on to the next stage in the process by a certain date you can be sure that the group is going to do its best to make you… encourage you.. to make that date.

I do most of my editing live on Twitch and when I don't stream I usually have a wonderful amount of messages telling me that I should have streamed so I can get a move on and put the book in the hands of those who have requested (demanded) to be beta readers.

Learning and Growth

Writing is one of those things where if you don't know the answer - ask - because I guarantee someone out there will have all the answers you need.

An online writing community can be filled with experts in all types of fields in different parts of the world. It doesn't matter if you simply need advice on basic storytelling or if you need formatting help from someone who used to be an editor. I can guarantee that whatever it is you need. you will be able to find it in your writing community far more detailed and helpful than anything typing it into a search engine would give you.

Where To Find Online Writing Communities

Writing communities can be found in all types of spaces online.

Social Media

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and even TikTok are all fantastic places to look for online writing communities. Hashtags such as #WritingCommunity or #AmWriting can be used on each of these sites to connect you with fellow writers.

Writing Workshops and Courses

While this one may not be a 100% free way to find a writing community, platforms such as Skillshare, Udemy, and Coursera all have discussion boards and community forms where writers can connect, interact, and support each other. There may also be free workshops and courses held in your local area. Check with your local library about joining a workshop or starting one if there is not one available.

---

Many benefits come from joining an online writing community and not that many drawbacks. As with all things be careful with what you share online. Personal information such as your address, phone number, or email should never be shared with others in an open chat setting. If someone is offering to complete services for a charge do your due diligence before exchanging payment. 9/10 times this is a scam and against group guidelines.

Best of luck!

With love,

B.K. xo xo
