Most Reliable Muscle Cars

Muscle cars and reliability rarely seem to go in the same sentence. The most reliable muscle cars this year are trying to change that.

Muscle cars are one of those car genres that really don't seem to fare well when it comes to long term reliability. Among mechanics, many muscle cars have become known as "long term lemons" due to the high chance that they have of breaking down.

In the past, it was even worse. Many muscle cars were given titles like the "Most Dangerous Car in History." But, times are changing, and so are car engineering standards. That means that most muscle cars these days are fairly durable machines that can also be pretty safe on the road.

If you want to have a car with a lot of horsepower and a lot of reliability, then you need to look at the most reliable muscle cars from 2016 onward.

2017 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang line has been a steady favorite among car aficionados for years, especially when it comes to the classic muscle cars that belong to the Mustang family. However, most of the time, the praise that's heaped on these beautiful machines is about their horsepower or the roar of their engines.

That being said, JD Power and Associates rated the Ford Mustang as one of the most reliable muscle cars you can buy, with a very impressive four out of five rating in testing. So not only does it sound great, run fast, and look hot — it also will ensure you get from point A to point B without a breakdown.

What more could you ask from one of the best American muscle cars of all time?

2017 Chevrolet Camaro

We can't talk about the most reliable muscle cars without tipping our hat to the other "major classic car," known as the Chevy Camaro. Camaros have always been known as sturdy, well-built cars that have powerful V6 or V8 engines — depending on the models you're looking at.

Though it only has a three out of five rating as opposed to the Mustang's four out of five rating, the truth is that we can't just snub decades' worth of engineering. These cars are remarkably safe, even though they max out at around 650 horsepower, and that, too, is worth something in the reliability department.

2017 Chevrolet SS

Many fans of 70s classic muscle cars will tell you that Camaros aren't the only star of the Chevy show; the SS models are pretty amazing, too! The 2017 Chevrolet SS is actually safer and more reliable than Camaros from the same year.

JD Power ranked them with a three and a half out of five reliability rating, with US News giving them an additional note for having such wonderfully dynamic handling. This is the last year that Chevrolet will be producing the SS, so if you love these models, you better snap them up sooner rather than later.

2017 Dodge Challenger

If you love retro cars with a smooth ride and a high performance engine, it's really hard not to have a soft spot for the Dodge Challenger. This muscle car model, which gets up to 707 horsepower on its strongest models, has a very respectable reliability rating.

According to US News, Dodge's 2017 Challengers have a three out of five star rating for reliability with JD Power. This makes them one of the most reliable muscle cars from Dodge — and one of the most reliable car models for people with a serious thirst for horsepower.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Corvettes walk a very fine line between a sports car and a muscle car. However, for the sake of this article, we're going to include them because they're awesome, unique — and because the Z06, in particular, is more of a supercar or muscle car than a sports car.

The Z06 boasts around 200 more horsepower than any other Corvette model out there, and packs as much as 655 ponies with its powerful engine. JD Power and Associates also ranked it with a three out of five star rating for reliability.

That makes it one of the most reliable muscle cars in the luxury market right now... and one of the most reliable sports cars, too, if you consider it to be a sports car.

2017 Dodge Charger

With a base model that offers over 250 horsepower, you know that Dodge isn't playing games with its Charger models. Along with having high maximum speeds and a great deal of ponies you can obtain from its super-powerful V6 engine, the Dodge Charger also is named one of the most reliable muscle cars on dealership lots.

Much like the Challenger, the Charger offers up as much as 707 horsepower in its high performance versions. However, these only got a two and a half out of five star rating from JD Power. That being said, the safety features make up for it — and let's just be real, it's one of the most reliable muscle cars for the price point.
