It was summer 2009, and my divorce was final after a Colorado mandated three-month separation. One month prior to being “separated,” I had just returned from a difficult 15-month tour in Iraq. While deployed with the 4th Infantry Division in Baghdad, I was part of a combined arms team of nearly 6000 U.S. service members fighting to win The Battle of Sadr City through the worst combat since the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Maya Cave Art or an Illusion of Time?
Archaeologists have long theorized that caves were extensively used by the ancient Maya as centers of ritual activity, seen as the home of gods and as portals to the Underworld. Xibalba (Shee-bal-ba) was the name the K’iche Maya gave to this underworld. The name Xibalba translates into ‘Place of Fright’, which hints at the terror, spirits and sacredness that caves infused into the Maya belief system. As such, the simple, crude and distorted faces and objects in Mayan cave art have long been viewed as part of the Xibalbá setting, in contrast to the exquisite lines and characters of the carved stelae monuments found at their ancient cities.

The beach is located in the Ribadeo municipality of the region. The beach provides a spectacular sight with natural arches and caves that can be seen only during low tide. During high tide also the beach can be accessed for swimming. During low tide, the Beach of the Cathedrals is a place that inspires the awe, and one can wander along the magnificent sea caves and majestic cliffs. The caves occur in a variety of sizes from small cracks in the rocks to massive openings. Sand corridors between rocky blocks, tall rocky arches, dozen-meters-long caves and other geologic wonders meet the eye of those visiting this beach.

To keep the cafard at bay living on the border line of two rural counties in North Carolina, we adopted a hobby that turned our discouragement for our small town into an appreciation of its hidden treasures. Within the forests of our town, we would spend our days exploring forgotten structures of the past. With drones above our heads and machetes on our hips, our goal was to document these abandoned beauties and create a television series around them. We called this endeavor, Anti-Destination.
