Dean Martin’s rendition of “Volare” played on a loop in my head as we flew through the air. This was my first overseas flight, and as fearless as I was every anxiety I had multiplied in my gut. The once spirited tune morphed into a robotic, out-of-tune, gnarled, snare. I blinked in and out of sleep as my dreams became the contents of the “Vocabularo” book that was my husband’s as a child. He’d told me that it wasn’t really necessary to speak Italian fluently. On his last visit to Sardinia he’d spoken mainly French and some English (both of which I could speak/understand passably). My sweet father-in-law Antonio had tried to teach me a bit of Italian, but I was far too distracted by all the pre-trip tasks. I couldn’t retain much of the language while keeping an amply supplied packing list in my mind. Oh my mind—like a sieve—straining pasta.

#1 Pack your own food. Packing your own food will save you money because we all know how expensive airport food is. Even if the airline provides you with free food it is most likely not the healthiest or the tastiest. I’m speaking from experience because I got a sandwich wrap and it made me feel a little queasy and it didn’t taste the best. It also had wilted lettuce and some of the veggies looked old. However, not all airline food is terrible because I ordered a cheese and cracker platter and everything was fresh and it was delicious. Remember to pack a healthy meal to keep you energized and feeling good on the plane.

Vacations are something we all look forward to. Since the airlines started charging for everything from baggage to where you sit, the cost of travel has been increasing for many travelers. This has made it more difficult to plan a trip and led some to even eliminate the number of getaways they take.

1. The person in security that acts like they have never flown before. Like how do you not know that you need to take your shoes off or put your items in the tubs? I guarantee you they have seen a movie or TV show showing someone going through security. Plus, there are signs everywhere telling you what to do, and not to mention the TSA officers repeating every five seconds what you need to do.

On social media, I keep reading about travel horror stories. They usually come in the form of delayed or cancelled flights, lost or late luggage, or general assholes in the airport or on the planes. After having so many positive travel experiences on route to my destinations that went off without a hitch, the odds of having something go wrong seems to be higher. I mean, something small HAS to eventually go wrong, right? This is my experience of having a true hellish trip.

When I started travelling back and forth from Colorado around 5 years ago, I (like most first-time solo flyers) thought that in order to have a happy and comfortable flight, I would need to bring as many creature comforts on board with me as possible.

Lotus FlowerPublished 6 years ago in WanderTraveling in the Winter
Living in Canada there is one thing that we all know very well and that is that winter is a long, cold, and terrible time of year. Between snow and freezing rain, the conditions of winter can make traveling nearly impossible. This applies to all methods of travel, and this holiday I had a particularly unique experience when it came to winter conditions.
