On the road again

Just can’t wait to get on the road again

Goin’ places that I’ve never been

Seein’ things that I may never see again

And I can’t wait to get on the road again

We’re the best of friends

Insisting that the world keep turning our way

And our way

Is on the road again

- Willie Nelson writer and performer

These lyrics seem so perfect for Randy and me. In our 60’s, we are celebrating 40 years of marriage on the road. When he proposed, I was 19 years old and in love but reluctant because I wanted to travel. In the end, we married and have been looking in the rear-view mirror ever since. True to the song we are the best of friends and excited about what might be around the corner.

When we parked the RV in August, we never imagined it remaining still for so long. I believe the culprit was the RV cover my husband draped over the top — out of side out of mind. Now, it is the end of November and we are on the road again. Everything happened quite innocently, both the staying and the going.

We are blessed to have multiple opportunities for travel. One of our favorite venues is to cruise, but with that avenue restricted due to COVID, in 2020 we traveled in the motorhome. However, when the quarantine of cruising lifted, we didn’t wait to climb aboard a ship to Alaska, playing it safe by staying in the states but also adventuring into new waters. We watched September sail away.

October, hunting season, and the colors of fall restricted our motivation to leave our mountain cabin. We rode four-wheelers, cut slash, roasted marshmallows and enjoyed long walks. The cool breezes pushed October over the horizon.

Then some friends offered us the use of their condo in Hawaii. How could we refuse? Maui provided a dream destination. All the while, a part of me wished for our RV so we could travel and stay among the floral and fauna of the magnificent island. However, the vast ocean definitely creates a barrier to that desire and if it was feasibly possible. the narrow roads would be an additional challenge. We did rent a car and drive the road to Hana. If you have any intereset in visiting Maui, you might enjoy this article, A Self-Guided Maui Tour.

Now we are on the road again in our home away from home. Does anyone else feel like a turtle when they travel in their motorhome? I love the experience. We have everything we need to explore when we are in the motorhome. We drive slowly seeking new experiences, stopping whenever we see something interesting. Traveling in an RV is my ultimate favorite mode of adventure.

We were asked before pulling out of the driveway, “Where are you going?” Well, we have a destination, Palm Springs, but are in no hurry and plan to enjoy the ride while getting out of Idaho before the first of the season’s snowflakes flitter from the sky. I figure I will wear long pants and tennis shoes for a couple days and then nothing more than shorts and sandals.

The first night of our trip we stayed in Provo, Utah, a beautiful campground with large trees. We walked a leaf covered path boarded by a stream and breathed in the fall air. Dagney, our Yorkie, must have remembered the drill because she settled in quickly and especially enjoyed the long evening stroll. The path is marked on the map above by the black line on the outer edge.

RV Tip: Pack an air fryer

After driving all day, we parked in our spot and sat down excited but a little tired and a lot tired. After examining the items in the fridge, an idea for a quick and easy meal formed in my mind.

An air fryer does take space but if it fits, it is well worth it. For dinner, I diced up some chicken, added fresh cut vegetables, doused it with teriyaki sauces and let it cook for 15 minutes stirring once. This was served on a bed of rice and tasted better than any fast-food restaurant.
