If the past couple of years has taught us anything, it is how to make the best of life while stuck at home. Between a pandemic and skyrocketing costs of goods, it might be hard for you to justify taking a vacation far from home. You might want to consider a staycation. A staycation is a vacation that you take at or close to home. You may be surprised by how much you have missed in your own city or state. Here are tips for planning and getting the most out of your staycation.

Do Some Basic Planning

One of the most stressful parts of a vacation is the research and planning process. You can plan as little or as much as you want with a staycation. There is no need to search for the best deals on flights, hotels, and activities. In fact, you can decide how much time you are willing to spend planning, or you can simply wing it, especially if your home will be your base at the beginning and end of each day.

It is easy to spend a little time googling your town or state and discover so many things to do that you might not have even known about. This can be very exciting and educational. If you have kids, let them help with this. Put a budget together while you are at it, just as you would for a vacation away from home.

Prepare Your Home

Many people clean their houses before leaving for a vacation, so the house is ready for them to come home and just crash. For a relaxing staycation, it is recommended that you clean the house, do your laundry, change the sheets, put out fresh towels and a robe, mow the lawn, pay the bills, and stock the fridge. You don’t necessarily want to spend your entire vacation doing chores or food shopping.

You might even want to make the house feel like a special space by placing fresh flowers in a vase, filling a bowl with fruit, having a bottle or two of bubbly in the fridge, and maybe setting up some candles for ambiance at night. Make your home feel like a nice hotel or relaxing spa.

Get Help with the Pets

When you travel, you may have to spend a lot of money boarding your dog. Not having to do that will add money to the kitty for having more fun. On the other hand, consider hiring a dog walker so you can stay out all day and into the evening. I also recommend having a mobile groomer come by the house to treat the puppy to a nice bath to go with your sparkling clean abode.

As an aside, you might also want to send the little ones and the dog for a sleepover at their grandparents’ place for some total me-time.

Leave Work at the Office

This is the time to delegate projects to co-workers and put your faith in them. Set up your email to go to an automated “out of office” reply. Let your bosses know that you will be unavailable. They don’t need to know where you are going (or not going).

Once you start the staycation, turn off your work phone and laptop. You might also want to take a break from social media. It is amazing how relaxing putting the tech away is.

Give Yourself Permission to Do Nothing

One of my favorite things to do as part of a staycation is to start and end the time with a pajama day. You aren’t traveling on the first and last days of the “trip,” so there is no need to set the alarm or get dressed up. Take the extra days off and put your comfy clothes on. Binge your favorite streaming channels and have meals delivered. If you have kids, allow them to stay in PJs all day if they want.

A staycation can be a very relaxing and eye-opening experience. This is a chance to chill, explore your surroundings, enjoy nice restaurants, and even do a DIY project that you really want to tackle without interruptions. Do a little bit of planning upfront, get your home ready, and leave work at the office. Most importantly, have a fun and stress-free time.

Athanasios Tsiropoulos is a real estate expert with over two decades of experience. His father realized the American Dream by building a real estate empire with nothing but his ability and strong work ethic. Athanasios, like his father, has the same drive and dedication to succeed.

Athanasios relocated to the Dominican Republic town of Punta Cana after a successful 20-year career. Noting how the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean created picture-perfect landscapes, Athanasios, an astute businessman, saw the island’s crystal-clear waters and more than 30 kilometers of white sandy beaches and knew it was the ideal location for his luxury rental property business, Good Times Punta Cana. In addition to managing short-term vacation rentals, he also managed single-family homes and large apartment complexes. fter working for several years learning the ins and outs of the business, Athanasios founded his own painting and home remodeling firm. He worked with numerous real estate brokers in Fairfield and Westchester County, New York, to renovate properties that were about to be put on the market.

Athanasios Tsiropoulos, who now calls Medellin, Colombia, home, enjoys spending time with nature and reaping the benefits of everything the city offers. Fishing, camping, and relaxing with his family are some of his favorite pastimes, and traveling whenever possible.
