The Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek is one of the most preferred Himalayan trekking destinations among adventure trekkers. In addition to just a trekking activity to the base of the world's highest mountain, It is a journey of exploring the nature and culture of the region.

The Base Camp Trek in Nepal is located in the Everest Himalayas, which reveal shipshape, bonny landscapes, green nature, wild animals, magic mountains, and more. An adventurous and dramatic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu links the trek to Everest Base Camp on Mt.Everest. It is a half-hour air journey to Lukla, presenting an unreal view of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Gaurishankar, Mahalangur, Makalu Barun, and the Tibetan massif. If the Kathmandu airport gets busy, the flights operate from Manthali (Ramechhap). You need to drive around 5 hours to reach Ramechhap from Kathmandu.

Tenzing-Hilary Airport in Lukla exists on the lap of a big hill, and it has a short runway. At the bottom of this airfield is a big cliff, which looks scary. So, the landing experience at this airport is an adventure for Everest trekkers and climbers.

The Sagarmatha National Park is a natural UNESCO world heritage site in Nepal. Except for the first day and a few hours on the last day of the trip, most Everest Base Camp trekking trails remain inside this national park.

Green forest, colorful flowers, Bushy juniper, and many other herbs and shrubs deliver freshness from the Sagarmatha National Park to the Everest trekkers. Rare Animals (musk deer) and other mammals like Himalayan Thar (wild mountain goat), Pika, and others make their way to the trail. Himalayan Monal, Tibetan snowcock, mountain hawk, and lots more birds move close to the walking area and make tuneful sounds. Natural resources like rivers, valleys, waterfalls, glacial lakes, and more ornate the hiking route to Everest.

Namche Bazaar: The Most Beautiful Sherpa Town on the Everest Base Camp Route

Namche Bazaar is one of the most beautiful and well-managed Sherpa towns during a trek to Everest Base Camp. It is located on the lap of a hill that leads to Syangboche and Khumjung villages. Being at an elevation of 3,440m above sea level, the Base Camp trekkers take their first acclimatization break here.

Alluring Thamserku and Kongde Peak look stunning from Namche Bazaar. At the top right, there is the army base, which is the national park headquarters. It is around a 15-minute walk from the guesthouse where you stay. You can see the unreal view of Mt.Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Amadablam, Thamserku, and many other big mountains. Some trekking and climbing gear is available in Namche Bazaar that you cannot even get in Kathmandu. You can visit bakery shops and bars to spend your time during your Namche stay.

Namche Bazaar serves as the central marketplace for people in the Everest region, where essential goods are brought in and sold. Every week, from Friday to Saturday noon, a weekly market is held, attracting locals who come to purchase daily-use items.

Hotel Everest View

Magnificent Mountain View from Hotel Everest View

Located at an altitude of 3,880m on Syangboche Hill, the Everest View Hotel offers a breathtaking view of the Himalayas, including Amadablam, Thamserku, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and more. It is the highest-altitude hotel on the Everest Base Camp Route and was established by Takasi Miyahara, a Japanese man. From the hotel, one can enjoy the attractive views of Phorche village on the right and Tengboche on the left, with the holy mountain Khumbila standing nearby.

During their acclimatization rest day in Namche Bazaar, trekkers visiting Everest Base Camp often make a 3-hour hike to the Everest View Hotel and the Everest Base Camp Helicopter tour's travelers land at this place for breakfast. Along the way, they pass the highest airport in Nepal, Syangboche, which provides an opportunity for altitude practice. At the hotel, visitors can indulge in hot drinks while taking in the magnificent view. They can then choose to walk back to Namche Bazaar directly or take a detour through Khumjung village, the largest Sherpa town in the Everest region. In Khumjung, there is a monastery where visitors can see the skull of the legendary Yeti.

Tengboche Hill

Situated at an elevation of 3,860m, Tengboche Hill is a sacred and strategic viewpoint on the Everest Base Camp Route. It offers the best vantage point to admire Mount Amadablam, considered the most beautiful mountain in the Himalayas. On the fourth day of the trek to Everest Base Camp, trekkers reach Tengboche Hill, which is surrounded by pine, rhododendron, and juniper trees. Here, they can visit an ancient Buddhist monastery that has been in existence for over a hundred years. The monks conduct daily invocations in the morning and evening, and visitors have the opportunity to join them in prayer. Tengboche Hill holds great religious significance for the Buddhist people of the Everest region and hosts the Mani Rimdu Festival, which takes place in October and November according to the Tibetan Lunar Calendar.

Nangkartshang Hill

Nangkartshang Hill, also known as Nagarjun, is located at an altitude of 5,083m to the left of Dingboche village in the Khumbu Himalayas. During the second acclimatization practice day of the Base Camp Trek, trekkers visit this hill from Dingboche. From the summit of Nangkartshang Hill, trekkers can enjoy a stunning view of the Everest Himalayas, including a glimpse of Mt. Makalu, the fourth-highest mountain in Nepal and the fifth-highest in the world. This viewpoint offers a unique perspective of Amadablam and provides fantastic views of Thamserku, Taboche, Khangteka, Cholatse, Island Peak, and more. Climbing Nangkartshang Hill is not only rewarding for the views but also helps prevent altitude sickness before attempting higher elevations such as Kalapatthar and Everest Base Camp. The ascent to the top takes approximately 3 hours from Dingboche, with an additional hour and a half for the return journey. The summit of Nangkartshang Hill is rocky and windy.

Kala Patthar Viewpoint

For the closest view of Everest, trekkers must not miss the opportunity to climb Kalapatthar Hill (5,545m). Despite the fatigue from the hike to the base camp, ascending Kalapatthar is essential to fully appreciating the beauty of the Everest Himalayas. This famous viewpoint offers a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of the Everest Massif. The climb begins in the early morning from Gorakshep and takes around 2 hours to reach the summit. The summit of Kalapatthar is covered with black rocks, which is how it got its name. Mt. Pumori, a stunning pyramid-shaped mountain, stands very close to the top. It is advisable not to spend too much time on Kalapatthar due to the effects of altitude and the strong winds accompanied by freezing temperatures. Interestingly, the view from Kalapatthar looks better at sunset than at sunrise.

Located at an altitude of 5,364m, Everest Base Camp serves as the central hub for Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse expedition teams. Many trekkers dream of reaching this place throughout their journey from Lukla. In the spring, Everest Base Camp resembles a mini-mountain city, adorned with colorful tents that create a beautiful sight, especially in the evening.

It takes approximately two to two and a half hours of hiking to reach the Base Camp from Gorakshep and a similar amount of time to return. Please note that there are no lodges at the EBC, so you will need to hike back to Gorakshep after visiting. While you won't have the best view of the world's highest mountain from here, being at the bottom of this famous mountain will undoubtedly fill you with pride.

Khumbu Glacier

The Khumbu Glacier, stretching about 12 kilometers, ranges in elevation from 4,900 meters to 7,600 meters at the Khumbu Icefall. Situated between Pumori and Everest, within the Nuptse mountain range, it is the highest glacier in the world. Everest climbers must navigate a massive icefall on the upper part of this glacier when heading to Camp I during their expedition.

For those trekking through the Everest High Pass, they will cross the Kongma La from Chhukung to Lobuche. Before reaching the camp at Lobuche, they will pass through this glacier. As EBC trekkers walk from Lobuche to Gorakshep, the glacier will remain on their left side.
