Bed, Birth & Beyond
I broke down again. I spent 18 months away from my friends and family. I did this to be with the person I love and he promised it would be different, he promised he would help out more, he promised he would be my emotional support since I would be away from my support network. We moved to a different state, but that may as well have been a different country, or a different planet.

It was my first day in 6th grade and I was ready to make you friends and enjoy my day at school, but I was not ready for the how embarrassing my day would be. I was only 12 but at the age of puberty, and the time when the hormones and changes take place. Mom had told me that I had entered puberty and part of this biological change would be that I would have blood flow every month. She told me what to expect, and explained every woman had to go through it. I asked so many questions, where does the blood come from? Will other people see it? Why, Why?
Let's Talk About PCOS
The idea of the new year has always been something special to me. Regardless of the legitimacy of the new year being a "fresh start", the concept has always seemed to motivate me into focusing more on my self-development, improvement and spirituality. That being said, I've often fallen short on those new year goals — I must have set myself the resolution to learn Spanish every year for the last five years alas I'm still no better a Spanish speaker than I was aged 16.

When I first got my period at the age of 11, I didn't know what was happening to me. We didn't really learn much about menstrual cycles in school, so I wasn't sure what this strange thing happening to me was. I remember calling my mom into the bathroom and asking her what was wrong with me and if I was dying. She started crying, smiled and said, "No sweetie - you have your period." She promptly showed me how to use a pad, and explained when I should change it - you know, typical mother/daughter talk.
A Message To All Women
As children we're all taught that it's important to have good hygiene. Nobody wants to be followed around by the bad hygiene monster or be bullied in school for being the stinky kid. But what happens when all those years of being told to stay clean take a turn for the worse?
I Have Endo and I Have Questions
I often think about how many times a woman that looks like me has spent the majority of her years in inexplicable pain. How many times did she beg to stay home from school as a child during the first few days of her period? How often has she had to use her sick time to call out of work as the pain becomes increasingly unbearable with the start of each menstrual cycle? I sometimes imagine how hard it may have been for her to explain to her parents, or friends, or partner, that this is NOT something that a few Midol and a heating pad can remedy. I often think about how many women that look like me, went back and forth to the doctor for YEARS searching for answers and solutions, only to be disappointed and dismissed time and time again.

I’m very protective about labeling myself so let me start by saying that I’m probably not a feminist... I am open to feminist exploration... I’m pretty sure that a feminist would have something good to say about their period. Here’s what I have to say: I got my period twice this month. I don’t remember the last time that’s ever happened. I feel “savage” when I’m on my period, like I’m out for blood (no pun intended).
