Skincare Routine
I have always been a skincare junkie, mostly because I have had terrible skin growing up. I have tried everything under the sun to get rid of my pesky acne. From over-the-counter meds, online dermatology services, various creams and what not. After years of refusal, I finally did my research and went to see a real dermatologist. Turns out, I have hormonal acne, which is why my skin would be clear one minute and then freak out the next; usually when it’s around that time of the month.

As a new semester approaches you find yourself looking at your closet and wondering what's appropriate from your summer clothes, yet what's presentable for the classy lady you are. The first week is when you should try and set a great tone for the semester. This is a great way to build your confidence on the start of your semester.

A few days ago, I recorded Chris Rock’s documentary Good Hair on BET. It was a fascinating piece that covered the science behind African-American hair care products, the cultural implications behind why black women put so much into their hair, and the business of weaves and where they come from. I noticed that so many mothers were taking their daughters to the salon to get a relaxer before they even hit puberty. Some of these little girls were under two-years-old. Chris Rock interviewed a six-year-old girl at a shop and asked her if it was important to get a relaxer and why. She said that every black girl should have a relaxer so they can be beautiful. There was something very disheartening about this. To think that so many young black girls are being raised in this mindset; the mindset that anything close to white is better or prettier.

I have worked in customer service for the past four years, since I was nineteen. I’m now twenty-three and my everyday experiences have not changed much since my first day. I imagine they’re the same experiences that other females have either waitressing, selling coffees, or even walking down the street. I have yet to talk to a man that has had a similar experience, but I’m sure there are a few out there that have had that one customer (or several) that have made their skin crawl or even made them consider quitting the minimum wage job. Because in reality, is it worth it?

If you’re anything like me, hair is basically your Achilles' heel (apart from crippling mental illness, I mean). I consistently get to the end of doing my *flawless* makeup, look at my raggedy new bob in the mirror and think… “Cool. Understated. No motivation to improve upon.” More often than not it’s a super chic, unbrushed, hanging by the sides of my face life for me.

I don't know how to make up. I'm not entirely sure of the reasons why; that's a lie it's because I'm lazy. Now my basic makeup skills fit perfectly with my basic bitch lifestyle, yet there are days where I'm feeling adventurous and want to see more than mascara on those eyes! And yes I've watched the tutorials, I mean I've skimmed through the tutorials, and by that I mean I've re-watched the part where they apply it about 20 times, then I have a go and fail and get upset and start binge watching Gilmore Girls—again. I mean we've all been there!

Korean beauty products are taking the world by storm, and as someone who has been using them for well over half a decade, I'm not the least bit surprised. K-beauty, as it's known, is a makeup movement that's falling in love with the amazing skin care, personal health, and beauty products being sold in Asia.

Your skin is the largest organ you have, and if you want it to treat you well, you will need to make sure to take care of it. Not using any skin care products or not bothering with a skin care routine of your own is a surefire way to quick wrinkles, bad acne, and an overall dull complexion.

Dear Beautiful Girl, I want to take this moment to tell you that you are beautiful right now. Your beauty isn't something that is going to happen once you find the perfect shirt, get the best manicure, take the most loved Instagram photo, or start dating the "right" person. Your beauty is in you, as you are, right now.
