Let’s talk about Witches. A personal obsession of mine, I love all things mystical, magical, and Witchy. Here are some of the best witchy books I have read recently.

Okay, let's start with a classic, the ULTIMATE witchy book, Practical Magic, by Alice Hoffman. The whole series is fabulous, and follows a family of matriarchal witches in New England through the generations. Practical Magic focuses on Gillian and Sally, two sisters (played by Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in the movie) who take very different paths throughout adulthood until one wild event draws them back together, and back to witchcraft. It’s a warm, wild and truly magical tale of love, loss and witchcraft. While the story is perhaps more famous in its movie form (which, I think, is equally delightful) the book is a real treasure, with a lot of depth, backstory, and characters not included in the movie. It’s an annual re-read for me (and re-watch!) and I can’t recommend it enough. If you like Practical Magic, check out the other books in the series, Magic Lessons, The Book of Magic, and The Rules of Magic. They are all, in my opinion, delightful and heartwarming. You can get a copy here.

Looking for a little romance with your witchcraft? I always am. The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling truly delivers. It’s cute, magical, funny and a little bit sexy. The Ex Hex follows Vivenne, a witch living in the romantic town of Graves Glen. She has just about everything under control, until her ex, and a descendant of the town’s founder, Rhys Penhallow, returns to Graves Glen for the Founder’s Day Celebration. As if running into the one who got away wasn’t bad enough, Graves Glen becomes the target of a magical attack, and it looks like Vivi and Rhys are the only ones who can stop it, but they’ll have to work together. Reading The Ex Hex felt like drinking a crisp apple cider on a cool autumn day, absolutely rejuvenating. You can find a copy of this charming story here.

Looking for a more serious look into the history of witchcraft? Check out Six Women of Salem: The Untold Story of the Accused and Their Accusers in the Salem Witch Trials, by Marilynne K. Roach. Have you ever wondered what actually went on during the Salem Witch Trials? Six Women of Salem is a comprehensive and thorough delve into a society that went, for lack of a better term, absolutely haywire, in the late 1600’s. The book takes a specific look at six different women that were deeply affected and played a part in the trials, to show us what can happen to a society with a corrupt and unjust system. The women vary from all stations in Salem society from wealthy to enslaved, and take a hard but illuminating look at the murderous crisis. A much more serious book than the others on this list, but a fascinating look all the same. You can get a copy here.

The last book on this list is actually a trilogy. The series is called Blackthorn & Grim by Juliet Marillier, and is one of the best fantasy series I have read in a long time (and I’ve read a whole lot of fantasy books) The series starts with Dreamer's Pool where we meet our protagonist, a tough magical heal named Blackthorn, recently on the lamb after escaping from imprisonment. Along with a fellow escapee she just can’t seem to get rid of named Grim, Blackthorn makes her way north, and the story just gets better, and more witchy, from there. Blackthorn and Grim are exceptionally warm, lovable, and relatable characters. It’s one of those stories you finish, and then want to immediately start over again. The Complete Blackthorn and Grim series consists of Dreamer’s Pool, Tower of Thorns, and Den of Wolves. All three books are equally heartwarming, and just so, so good. You can get a copy of this darling trilogy here.
