While early detection can significantly improve a woman’s chances of surviving the disease, breast cancer also often affects women physically, emotionally, and socially. Developing a personalized screening profile is an important step toward early detection, but not necessarily early treatment.

The next step is to find a way to improve treatment outcomes. This will require better understanding of how breast cancer affects women across the lifespan, and how this influences their risk and treatment decisions. My research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that control cell survival and death in breast cancer, and the role that obesity and diet might play in disease risk. I am also interested in the role that social preferences and stigma play in breast cancer patient decisions.

Some of the signs to look for, while doing Breast Self Examination

While breast cancer is most often thought of as a disease that happens to women when they are older, breast cancer can also strike younger women. The most common type of breast cancer occurs in women over 55, but are also the most common type of cancer in women under 45. The first signs of breast cancer are typically changes in the breast, such as lumps or dimpling. However, sometimes the first sign of breast cancer is not a change in the breast, but rather a change in the way the breast feels.

Breast self-examination is an important part of the diagnosis and early detection of breast cancer. It is often the only way women discover a potential diagnosis early. Breast self-examination can be done by feeling, looking, and squeezing the breast. While this is an important way to detect breast cancer, it is also important to understand the signs to look for, while doing breast self-examination.

-A lump found in and around the nipple or underarm -Change in size or shape -Nipple discharge or nipple turning inward -Redness of skin or warmth -Formation of dimple or change in skin texture

Some of the causes of having breast cancer

Breast cancer can be caused by many factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and environment. Some of the factors include: -Having a first-degree relative, such as a parent, sibling, or child, who had breast cancer before -Losing your first-degree relative to breast cancer before -Being diagnosed with a different type of cancer, such as prostate cancer, lung cancer, or skin cancer -Stress from life events, such as death of a loved one, finding out you have cancer, or having to care for a sick loved one -Exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals at work

Some of the causes of breast cancer are:

- over exposure to the sun

- genetics

- exposure to radiation (radios and X-rays)

- family history of breast cancer

- birth control pills

- diet

- obesity

- lack of exercise

- previous cancer

Researchers are continuing to explore more about the hereditary causes of this disease, but treatment is mostly focused on the use of medication or surgery after a woman develops breast cancer.

Methods to Prevent Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and one of the most deadly. The best way to prevent breast cancer is to get regular physical exams and mammograms, which can help to find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. However, there are some lifestyle choices that can also help to prevent breast cancer. For example, getting regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol intake can help to lower your risk of breast cancer.
