To be a Woman

Why is it, that the year is 2021, and women still must fight so hard to find equality, respect, and success? Why is it, that we as women, are judged just because we possess breasts and a vagina?

Just the other day, the sole guy at work, messaged me to ask if I would switch hours for SuperBowl Sunday so that he could watch the game. Not a single inquiry that I might, in fact, have plans made to watch that same game. Why would I watch football, after all, I am just a girl.

Why is it too, that when women are actively into male dominated sports, that she is only into it because she is attracted to the players or participants?Because surely we cannot be into it simply for the love of the game. No, not us women.

It isn't just male dominated sports where we face judgments either. Oh no, we cannot take interest in anything that is considered manly in any way at all. Like to work on cars while female? You must be lesbian. Work in male dominated industries of any kind? Yep, lesbian. Or wait, maybe you have a thing for men you work with. Who is it? Jeez man is it frustrating and foolish.

Even when we work in fields that are not typically masculine in nature, just by being in possession of a vagina, we face challenges that no man would ever endure. Less pay, less chance of promotion, and we are either given less responsibility because we are women and have fragile emotions or we are given more responsibility because we are women so naturally we are neater and more organized, right? Okay so while that last point may be grounded in some truth, it is still a judgment born out of our gender and isn't fair to us.

Not only do we face judgments and such for being women, we face discrimination and a daily fear for our safety. We risk assault just because some boy cannot control his sexual urges. We face lack of justice should we be believed if we speak out. We face being shamed and blamed if we speak out. We cannot win in the game of them vs us, because the justice system and the world is ran by them.

We cannot go out with a group of our friends to a bar and have a worry free night. No, we have to constantly watch our backs, and our friends backs to ensure that no one is slipping some drug into a drink. We have to be sure no one is being came onto when it isn't desired. We have to keep an eye out for guys with roving hands. And we have to watch out for the other females in the room too, because who else will?

It doesn't end there. Oh no, if we get a Lyft or Uber home, hell we gotta watch out for the driver too. Who knows their real intentions. Seems foolish and I'm pretty sure most men would brush it off as over reacting or something like that, but it isn't. It is our reality. We don't get that privilege to walk down the street without taking in everyone we pass and any spot where someone could be hidden away. That's how we become victims, when we don't stay on high alert at all time.

But, hey, isn't it a thrill being a woman in 2021?
