WrestleMania 37 Night One: Top 5 Matches
WrestleMania in all it’s splendor!
We are officially in WrestleMania week as the global event airs this Saturday and Sunday night. WWE has announced some incredible matches including Gunther defending his intercontinental Championship against both Drew McIntyre and Sheamus in a massive triple-threat match, and Roman Reigns defending his WWE Undisputed Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes.
I have taken the liberty to go back and highlight the top five matches from WrestleMania 37 Night One. Keep in mind that this was the first pay-per-view in front of the fans again during the pandemic, so the excitement was through the roof.
Honorary Mention: Braun Strowman vs. Shane McMahon
There’s not much to mention about this match. The arrogant rich kid antagonizes the big tall giant. Half the match is spent with Shane trying to keep down Strowman, but all his attempts were thwarted.
This did nothing for ‘The Monster Among Men’ other than getting him on the Mania card.
5. Miz and Morrison vs, Bad Bunny and Damien Priest
Throughout the history of WrestleMania, there have been dozens of celebrities that have competed inside the squared circle including Mr. T, Micky Rourke, and even former boxer Mike Tyson sorta but, but nobody holds a candle to Bad Bunny. The international music star delivered such an amazing performance completely shocking the WWE Universe and even The Miz himself.
Damien Priest portrayed his role perfectly as the badass destroyer, while Bad Bunny soared through the skies to take out his rivals. Bad Bunny shined so bright that WWE had him return as a surprise return at the 2022 Royal Rumble.
4. AJ Styles and Omos vs. The New Day: (Raw Tag Team Championships)
You have to give credit to The New Day for this match oh, and the phenomenal AJ Styles who shined in this. Both Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods did their best with keeping their rival isolated so the Nigerian giant wouldn’t enter the match.
Unfortunately, after a missed attack Omos entered and wrecked the tag champions. A squash match at this point with Styles and Omos getting the victory and winning the titles.
3. Drew McIntyre vs. Bobby Lashley: (WWE Championship)
After an unfortunate rain delay to open up the grand spectacle, both powerhouses waged war over the coveted heavyweight championship. McIntyre was seeking to regain the title after Lashley won the title after Extreme Rules against The Miz.
McIntyre looked to be on his way to victory until MVP distracted him which allowed Lashley to lock in The Hurt Lock.
2. Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins
I’ll be brutally honest here, the only reason this match isn’t number one is that Cesaro essentially gained little momentum and ultimately left the company. This massive victory was supposed to catapult Cesaro into the main-event championship scene, while he did have one title shot it wasn’t enough.
Seth Rollins was Seth Rollins and created magic in the ring like always. Rollins just shines in every match he’s in. Cesaro got the first massive victory in his newly-invigorated singles career. He would lose to Roman Reigns months later, leave the WWE and join AEW.
1. Bianca Belair vs. Sasha Banks: (SmackDown Women’s Championship)
I first want to give credit where credit is due, Sasha Banks did everything in her power to make her challenger look like a star in the making. The champion tried everything she could to hold onto her title but, this was Bianca Belair’s breakout moment on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
Belair showed up and delivered near-fall after near-fall over the champ. Belair countered her rival into a picture-perfect KOD to win her first Women’s Championship. This was truly a magical moment to close out the first night of WrestleMania!
