I will try to be a non-bias as possible. Being that I am a born and raised West Coast girl and whether I am watching the sports media from all over the country or games with fans, I must say that I do feel that East Coast sports teams as well as their fans have a more notorious history. People in the East Coast take sports very seriously. It is not to say that the West Coast doesn’t take it seriously as well or have crazy fans, however I do not hear as many stories about fan bases and traditions like I do in the East Coast.

East Coast:

- NY teams

New York teams, whether it is the Yankees, Giants, Knicks, Nets, etc. take their sports very seriously. In fact, one of the things that I have heard is that the sports journalists are tough in New York. Playing sports in New York is like broadway: If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. You can’t be thin-skinned playing in New York. The fans also take their sports seriously as well. Whether it is fighting with rivals, opponents or themselves love their teams.

Philadelphia

In football, the Eagles fan base is notorious. So much so that opposing team’s fans cannot so much as wear their team’s jerseys or other attire. If I am not mistaken, I think there was even a fan of the Eagles that punched a police horse? Either way, the fan base is known for being a little rowdy at times.

Boston

Celtics, Red Sox, or NE patriots, Boston is a city where championships are known for many years. It is also home to some of the most racist fans. From the racial slurs that were thrown to a black Baltimore Orioles player, to taunting a Celtics player with slurs as well, Boston is known for saying inappropriate and obscene things at players; whether on opposing teams or on their team(s).

These are just a few examples of the East Coast teams and their fanbase that shows the passion that they have for their teams; despite it being controversial.

West Coast teams

I am aware that there are no perfect fan bases out there. I also know that the West Coast has its fair share of rowdy fans or rowdy teams.

- Raiders

The raiders, which happens to be my favorite team, has a notorious reputation of being rowdy and having rowdy fans. After all, we do have the “Black Hole”. We also have fans that fight each other and opposing teams. We have rivals, but nothing compares to our rival that was once our neighbor, the SF 49ers.

- Raider vs. 49ers 2011 preseason

These two west coast teams loathe each other. The fans hate each other more. It came to head almost 10 years ago when a fight got out of hand in the crowd that was so bad, that the two teams were never allowed to play a preseason game ever again. Many were injured and if I am not mistaken, a fatality occurred as well.

In Conclusion:

No fans, regardless of the region, is perfect. Fans take it seriously because they have passion for their team and sport. Regardless of what we might think of the fans, journalists or the teams, people know that at the end of the day, there is nothing but love for the team as if they are a part of the team somehow. I will say that I admire the passion that these teams as well as their fan bases have for the sport(s). There is history within these teams and for that, I have to say: play ball!
