NFL Week One - My three biggest Surprises
To attribute week one of the NFL’s 2022 regular season a ‘surprising’ one would be a weighty understatement. I struggle to recall another season in recent memory to which held so many storylines, upsets and diversions from pre-established narrative. These surprises range from Baker Mayfield’s struggles within his supposed ‘revenge game’ – or Rodgers’ utter inability to keep the game close against his divisional rival. Chief amongst my surprise are three games in particular. Though, of course, it is a gross generalisation to pinpoint my shock to three games, I feel these set were the most egregiously unexpected.
Martin S. WathenPublished 2 years ago in UnbalancedNFL Week 1 Recap: Super Bowl Hangover?
At long last, the NFL is back! We drink in the NFL season because it's the shortest of all of the main sports seasons, which results in the longest offseason--lasting from mid-February until early September. Though my main sport is hockey, I often find myself counting down the days until the the NFL does return, and because I play fantasy football, the eagerness increases. Nevertheless, the season is here, and what an opening week it truly was.

"It was the most playing time I got—cleanup duty in a rout," said the two year backup. But the inevitable roster turnover has him ready to take the helm and make a mess of opponents this fall.
Rich MonettiPublished 2 years ago in UnbalancedCFL Week 14 Recap: Seven Weeks Left
In the CFL season, the Labour Day Weekend batch of games is often followed by a few rematches on the following week. Week 14 is also a pivotal week, as the season becomes two-thirds done, with only seven weeks left to go. While we did get a pair of rematches, Week 14 actually began with the Montréal Alouettes hosting the BC Lions, the latter being the one team who did not participate in the Labour Day Weekend festivities. This was a battle between second place teams in their respective divisions, but despite this, the teams were leagues apart in the overall standings. Even though the Lions were on the road, I (and probably many other fans) expected a lopsided win in favor of the road team.

Fun Fact: There are 3 men with some derivative of my name in my bloodline. My father, (the one who cursed me with the Dolphins and their second longest active playoff win drought) and his father, a Lions fan (the longest active playoff win drought). A combined 71 years of playoff futility between 3 generations. What a legacy. (My hypothetical progeny will most assuredly have very normal names: Emily, Michael, Jeff, something that was still popular post-world war I)
Mel GrasselPublished 2 years ago in UnbalancedFootball fandom in the multi-platform world: SuperOne is ready to step in
SuperOne's founder, Andreas Christensen realized a few years ago, that traditional TV sports broadcasting is in decline. New-age platforms, driven by social media, are on the ascendant. This is the world in which the modern football fan lives and breathes. This realization was actually the very beginning of the SuperOne Fandom Metaverse we know today!
SuperOne NewsPublished 2 years ago in UnbalancedCFL Week 13 Recap: The Fruits of Labour
Labour Day Weekend is treated as the biggest week of the CFL season, and for good reason. It's the weekend where all of the rivalries take place--where the biggest statements are made, and where the most surprising moments become etched in the memories of many fans. In the shortened 2021 season, Labour Day Weekend took place early in the season, but with the season back to fully normal, the holiday weekend's batch of games are back in their annual scheduled position: often taking place prior to the season's home stretch.

Photo by Sophia Degl In 2022, JoJo Degl celebrated a section one lacrosse championship, and crossing the Hudson to defeat Somers was no bother. However, it wasn’t the only body of water she traversed this year, and making the New York Gaelic football team, she traveled to Dublin for the John West Feile Championships. An amazing accomplishment for each of the 24 girls, the New Yorkers were probably happy just to compete in Ireland’s game, and once all was said and done, the team followed suit by simply going to McDonald’s. Still, the Irish on hand were taken aback and not just because of the New York jerseys.
Rich MonettiPublished 2 years ago in UnbalancedIs The 49ers Season Bungled or Salvaged?
The 49ers have been saying that Jimmy G was done all off-season and that it was Trey Lance's team. Jimmy G gave a farewell speech after their NFC Conference Championship loss. The only problem with this message is that Jimmy G is still a 49er. First, trade talks slowed because Jimmy had surgery on his throwing shoulder without telling the team. Then the team sectioned Jimmy off, and he wasn't in team meetings or practices. The story then became that the 49ers were allowing Jimmy to seek a trade, and he just needed to pass his physical. The 49ers also heavily inferred that if a trade wasn't reached, Jimmy would be cut at the end of August before the final roster selection, voiding Jimmy G's 20 + million dollar contract.

Introduction: The “Choir Huddle” Len Dawson, the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback who led the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl IV and was the Most Valuable Player of that game in 1970, passed away this past week at the age of 87. As always happens in our society, people who were legends in their time are given a final “15 minutes of fame” when they die. And so this week has been filled with many tributes to Dawson, who not only had a stellar career with the Chiefs on the field, but was synonymous with the team as he broadcast the team’s games for over three decades after he retired from playing. He was perhaps most known nationally to a new generation of football fans for his work over many years on HBO’s pro football show, “Inside the NFL.”
David WyldPublished 2 years ago in UnbalancedCFL Week 12 Recap: Back in the Saddle
When a team hits a rare lull, many wonder how said team will respond. Will they get back on track? Will it serve as just a blip on the radar? Or will the lull continue and turn into a skid? Those were the looming questions that hit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who were coming off their first loss of the season in Week 10, and a bye on Week 11. The first test came on a Thursday evening in Winnipeg, as the Bombers hosted the Calgary Stampeders in a West Division battle. It looked a bit shaky for the Bombers, as they actually trailed at halftime. It was only by one point, but still, it wasn't looking good. However, the Bombers did manage to take the lead late in the fourth, and as a result, they won 31-29 over the Stamps. A shaky return to play, but still, a win is a win.

Welcome to the most expensive ticket in the NFL. The Las Vegas Raiders. What a journey it has been to be able to finally attend a game in Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas. As a Canadian we attended many CFL games in Vancouver Canada. But after living in the Las Vegas for about 17 years I always thought my first NFL game would be in Vegas. But turns out it ended up being in Tampa Bay last year during the Pre-Season as well. Why you ask. Well... I'm unvaccinated and I was not allowed to attend games last year in Vegas. It made me a little bitter and lost me as a Raiders fan. At least for a while.
