On Tuesday October 6, Somers hosted Hen Hud at the high school, and while the visitors came in with their sails, the wind definitely wasn’t at the Sailors’ backs.
Somers scored 14 minutes into the game and added two more first half goals en route to an easy 6-0 victory.
The Tuskers got right to work too. Off a Sheldon Connor penalty shot, the ball kicked out to Harper Ritson, he swung his leg, but Aaron Mendez won the one v one at 38:06.
The Tuskers didn’t go far, though. Milan Sath got into a race to the goal line, and even though the goalie got there first, the forward kicked hard to the goalie gut at 37:30.
The Hen Hud wall stood and his team went on the move the other way. Michael Arias kicked ahead, found Ethan Ramos in stride and play precariously ensued around the Somers net.
Somers did converge at 31:15 and alleviated matters for themselves. However, Hen Hud still forced a penalty shot that Jhostin Robles put on target. Not good enough, Nick Chao leapt and made a two handed snare on the ball.
So the offense took the cue. Trevor Keimig intercepted the ball at midfield, worked to the sideline and found Kenji Todo inside. The middie shot and his deflection off the defense landed on Ritson’s foot. Not for long, the senior had plenty of margin for error, and no apologies, he got his team on the board at 26:10.
Two minutes later, Ritson didn’t mind having a lot less room to deal with. On a long ball ahead, he settled on the right and put the moves on between two Hen Hud defenders. Good for space, he kicked, and Somers led by a score of 2-0.
Hen Hud kept their Sailor caps up nonetheless. Unfortunately, Somers had the edge there too. On a penalty kick from the 35 yard line, with the ball entering the fray, Danny Semenza rose head and shoulders above the rest, and the apex was good for the defensive clear.
A few minutes later, it was Todo who did the same number but Somers executed one better the other way. After the defense whiffed on a kick forward, Connor Sheldon pounced, got the ball to Keimig, and he dished to Sath on the left side. Work still to do, the forward dribbled diligently to control, and eventually with a little real estate, he put a 3-0 stamp on the first half.
The drama largely gone and off to the second half, Ritson added a goal for the hat trick, and the Tuskers swung their trunks and sharpened their ivory in victory.
In the upswing, Somers finished their regular season with a 9-4 record and entered the sectional one tournament as the sixth seeded team. This meant Somers hosted a home game at the high school versus the Pelham Pelicans on Thursday, October 23rd. A close 1-0 game through the first half, fortunes seriously turned after the intermission. Harper Ritson began by scoring eight minutes into the second half and followed with his second goal four minutes later. The final tally was added by Keimig and AJ Coviello and it was off to the next round.
