Reviewing Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez's Reunion

The first-ever NXT Women's Tag Team Champions are back together, and they have their sights set on regaining the titles

Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai are back together for the first time in 8 months

Eight months prior, I wrote a story about the end of the alliance between Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez; an alliance that began back in February of 2020. The pair joined forces due to a shared belief that they had been ignored in the NXT Women's Division, and as a unit, Dakota and Raquel entered and won the first ever Women's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, with their reward being the honor of serving as NXT's first ever Women's Tag Team Champions. Though they quickly lost the titles on that same night, the pair remained together even during Raquel's successful quest to become NXT Women's Champion.

However, it was Raquel's success that ended up dividing the duo, as Dakota betrayed Raquel and attacked her during the summer of 2021, resulting in a title contest at NXT Takeover 36, which Raquel won. Dakota would end up getting the last laugh at Halloween Havoc, when her attack towards Raquel would result in Mandy Rose taking the NXT Women's Championship on that evening. After feuding with each other; Raquel and Dakota were on separate paths entering the 2nd Women's Dusty Classic, with Raquel paired with Cora Jade while Dakota was in an intriguing alliance with Wendy Choo. When the teams faced each other in the semifinals, it was Toxic Attraction's attack on Raquel that ended up leading to Dakota and Wendy winning and advancing to the finals.

Which brings us to the latest edition of NXT. Dakota was distraught over the fact that Wendy Choo had been attacked, but later on, Toxic Attraction emerged and took full credit for attacking Wendy, with Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne vowing to be in Mandy's corner as she defeats Cora Jade, Io Shirai, and Kay Lee Ray at Stand & Deliver. At that moment, Dakota enters and goes after the triumvirate in an attempt to avenge the attack on Wendy, but to a bigger surprise, Raquel (who was portrayed as being out for 8 weeks at most) returned and took down Toxic Attraction before coming face to face with her former partner. After an awkward glance, the two women hugged, and later held up the tag titles, letting Toxic Attraction know that they were coming for the titles that they once held together.

WWE later made it official: Toxic Attraction's Jacy Jayne and Gigi Dolin will defend the tag titles against the reunited team of Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai, and it will take place at Stand & Deliver's kickoff show on April 2 in Dallas. So that answers the question regarding the tag titles, as Dusty Cup winners Io Shirai and Kay Lee Ray decided to use their victory to go after Mandy's NXT Women's Championship instead of challenge for the tag titles. It does, however, put the kibosh on an angle that I was hoping would happen after Stand & Deliver; in my story about the NXT Women's Championship announcement, I suggested that a possible Cora Jade title win could change things in regards to her alliance with Raquel, as we could see Cora end up feuding with an evil Raquel in a matter of months. This tag title contest changes things, especially due to the fact that Raquel and Dakota will most likely win the titles.

Could Wendy Choo end up becoming the evil Mei Ying?

However, the whole thing does leave us wondering what will happen with Wendy Choo. The Wendy Choo gimmick has been portrayed by former indie wrestler Karen Q, who originally started her regular NXT run as the evil Mei Ying. As we remember, Mei Ying was the sinister leader of the Tian Sha faction that consisted of Boa and would corrupt Xia Li, but the role was dropped a few months prior, leading to the current character of Wendy Choo--whose persona centers on wearing pajamas and taking naps. I myself wonder if the attack could lead to the Mei Ying persona being resurrected. I hope it does; I would love to see a split personality angle in women's wrestling. I have yet to see that. It would be epic if Wendy Choo is portrayed as a cover identity/persona for Mei Ying, which would result in segments where the personalities clash and Wendy slowly becomes taken over by her evil alter-ego.
