Is Serena Deeb Destined to Become Champion?

Championship gold could be on the horizon for this ruthless AEW villainess

Serena Deeb signed with AEW in September 2020

I have been a fan of Serena Deeb for over a decade now. I still remember her days in Ohio Valley Wrestling, which led her to WWE's main roster, where she served as the lone female member of the Straight Edge Society. Sadly, I also remember her long injury hiatus in 2011, but Serena returned with a vengeance, and she is now killing it in All Elite Wrestling.

Serena officially signed with AEW in September of 2020, and it was a month later that she defeated Thunder Rosa to capture the NWA Women's World Championship. She would continue to defend that title on both NWA and AEW shows, up until she lost the title to Kamille at NWA's When Our Shadows Fall in June of 2021. Shortly after losing the title, Serena suffered a knee injury and went on another hiatus.

During Serena's hiatus, I would see promos from her where she refers to herself as the "professor" of pro wrestling, as well as the "Woman of 1000 Holds." Serena's promos were very passionate, but there was one other thing I couldn't help but notice: they were also quite villainous. Serena's last few matches in NWA--in-between losing the title and her injury hiatus-- saw her act as a rule-breaking villainess, and that combined with the heated promos led this fan to sense that Serena could be turning heel in AEW.

Serena Deeb turned heel after returning from injury

That question would be answered on AEW Dynamite's 2nd Anniversary show, which featured Serena competing in a dream match against former AEW Women's World Champion Hikaru Shida. For Shida, she was on the verge of a milestone; she was one win away from becoming the first female talent to pick up 50 wins in AEW. Unfortunately for Shida, Serena thwarted her goal, and it ended up becoming worse for Shida, as after the match ended, Serena turned heel by brutally attacking Shida, even going as far as taking Shida's "50 Wins" plaque and using it as a weapon against Shida.

Since then, the evil Serena has continued her physical tit-for-tat with Shida, though Shida would eliminate Serena in the TBS Championship Tournament to pick up win #50. However, Serena would get her revenge later on, as she singlehandedly and physically cost Shida in her quarterfinal match, as Shida was defeated and eliminated by another former AEW Women's World Champion, Nyla Rose.

I am very elated to see heel Serena again; she is an amazing wrestling villainess and she has proved it many times before. One of my favorite moments came in the first Knockouts Knockdown in 2013, which saw Serena turn a friendly and competitive bout with Mickie James into a heated competition with her vicious assault to Mickie. I also remember Serena's debut in Shine Wrestling in 2014; defeating Santana Garrett before turning heel and becoming the new leader of the promotion's villainous faction, Valkyrie.

All of this brings me to what I consider my prediction for 2022: Serena's villainous persona will lead her to a championship in AEW. There are now two championships for AEW's women's division, but I see Serena eventually capturing the bigger one: the AEW Women's World Championship. I can see Thunder Rosa dethroning Britt Baker as champion, and that will open the door for the evil Serena to resurrect her past title feud and (possibly) take another title from Rosa. Time will tell if this prediction comes true, but for now, I will continue to enjoy watching Serena Deeb in all her evil glory!
