Utilitarian Standpoint: Issues Where I Stand Neutral

Part V

Hey Guys,

Today I want to talk about neutrality, and the top ten social issues that I stand neutral on. I wrote something similar where I listed top ten things which people are irrationally sensitive about. It was not accepted because it was too broad and not specific enough. So bear with me while I make the list, short and simple. Welcome to another post in the us series where I talk about subjective matters aiming towards an objective solution. It is a story that affects all of us.

Neutrality

The biggest problem within the education system is that they never (at least in my experience) encourage neutrality. They rather tell you to pick “a side” and defend it. Whether it be something as simple as “Romeo and Juliet” or something as complex as the family law.

The thing is that there are many issues where you cannot pick a side with a clear conscious. Not everything is black and white. There are shades of grey. Yes, the aim should be to unravel these shades of grey into clear, balanced boxes. But sometimes, even if you think that you have found the clear line, the issue itself is so complex that you’re logical solution is just not practical enough. A counter problem always crops up and renders your found solution redundant.

For me, the divide in life is very clear: Conservatism vs Liberalism = Sensitivity vs Indifference < Subjectivity vs Objectivity. All you intelligent people out there will hopefully know what I mean by this equation. I do not want to talk about this too much right now in order to stay focused on the main topic, social issues to which I am neutral.

I want to be straightforward and say that legally, I support all these issues. I might be morally biased, but I most definitely do not view the world with a moral compass. The only morality I apply to the world: Any action that harms someone else physically and financially is absolutely wrong and criminal. I completely disregard emotions, aka “hurt feelings,” for most circumstances if not all. The reasons being that to me emotional and mental health (kind of synonymous, as both come from the mind) are personal responsibilities.

When I say neutrality, I do not only mean indifferent (which I am on many areas, like someone’s diet). I do not even mean complete impartiality here (which again I am in other areas, like two young children fighting). The apt word for my state of mind on these issues is undecided.

Suffice it to say, I am 95 percent liberal, 90 percent indifferent, and 70-80 percent objective. Regarding these issues, I can claim to fall neatly in these three categories. But I do not as easily fall into the opposing side of these broad umbrellas. Again total legal support, but very very confused on the economical and social aspect of these things, which you will know about later on as this series grows. Today, let us just introduce ourselves to these issues and keep them extremely simplistic.

Without further ado, let’s list down the social political issues I remain neutral on. For these, I have a harder time finding my own objectivity and concrete practical solutions.

1. Abortion

2. Education

3. Economics: Capitalism vs. Communism

4. Prostitution and/or Porn

5. Stereotypes (Do not shoot me just yet, I’ll explain myself on this one soon enough)

6. Politics

7. Social Sensitivity

8. Words and/or Labels

9. Media

10. Freedom of Speech vs Hate Crime (Where does one start and the other end?)

I do not aim to talk about the above issues collectively, because each deserves its own article. But I want to use them to show you how sometimes there is not a clear answer. That some things cannot be neatly put into a right or wrong box. And some of these are such emotionally charged issues that they can cease from being objective. Hence, I remain neutral, aka, not objective enough.

Adios Amigos!
