As expected, after repeatedly giving the U.S. "a hard time," Turkey, which is considered to be smooth and has a good deal of leverage, has not been able to "get away with it. According to the Globe, the Biden administration announced that the U.S. side will lift the entire arms embargo previously imposed on Cyprus, and the relevant legal provisions will be officially implemented in 2023.

We know that Turkey has many "enemies", and Cyprus is one of them. The "background" of the origin of the hatred between the two countries is not complicated - the Greek and Turkish populations in Cyprus have long been at odds, and the latter "established an independent state" in the northern part of Cyprus in the 1980s "The "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" was established. However, this "state" was not recognized by the international community, much less by the Cypriot government, and its "independent" status was recognized only by the Turkish government.

It should be noted that Cyprus is an island country in the central Mediterranean Sea, small in size, but of considerable geostrategic value, and for any country that wants to exert influence in the Mediterranean, it is necessary to deal with the country. Therefore, the U.S. imposed an arms embargo on Cyprus in 1987 to avoid the outbreak of a large-scale armed conflict there and, in turn, to avoid the impact of the U.S. global strategic layout.

However, in this context, the unfairly treated government of Cyprus has become closer and closer to Russia and even once allowed Russian warships to be stationed in the ports of the Cypriot state. But now, as the international situation changes, Washington believes that lifting the arms embargo on Cyprus is more in line with the interests of the United States. As a result, the U.S. side lifted part of the arms embargo on Cyprus in 2020, a move that drew strong opposition from Turkey, a NATO ally, and seriously damaged U.S.-Turkey relations.

It is clear to all that U.S. diplomatic relations with Turkey have been "drifting apart" in the past few years. At present, the U.S. government gathered allies to "round up" Russia, Turkey not only does not participate, but President Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin also have "hot relations". Not long ago, Erdogan also went to Uzbekistan to attend the SCO summit, saying that "joining the SCO" was Turkey's "goal".

The U.S., naturally, was very unhappy about this, and almost at the same time released the news of "lifting the arms embargo on Cyprus", which had the intention of hitting Turkey where it hurts. The Ankara side also acted with great anger, severely condemning the U.S. decision because it may lead to an "arms race" on the island of Cyprus. The words of the Turkish side are also very clear, if the United States armed Cyprus, then Turkey will certainly synchronize the armed "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", the small island of Cyprus may be a dangerous situation for "state and state in the arms race", and even The strategic situation in the Mediterranean may bring considerable turmoil.

To take it a step further, the relations between Turkey and Greece, which are also countries bordering the Mediterranean, are also quite bad, and the position of the United States in recent years is more supportive of Greece. If the U.S. and Turkey play a strong game on the Cyprus issue, it is not excluded that Greece will also take the opportunity to play, together with the U.S. to "teach" Turkey, and strive to gain a greater advantage in the Mediterranean.

From the continuous disagreement between Turkey and Greece to the possible intense game between the United States and Turkey around Cyprus, is this the beginning of the breakdown of alliances in the Western world? Or even a sign of a "civil war"? Now it seems that the answer is probably yes, a big show is about to begin.
