none of the above

view from across the pond

From the other side of the pond the us election looks like a vote for Trump or the one that isn't Trump. The one that isn't Trump appears to be on the verge of a narrow victory while the one that is Trump is launching court appeals like a machine gun. Naturally where trump gets a winning vote its all ok, and of course where he's not winning is dodgy and biased. It must be that obvious on both sides of the ocean but I do sometimes wonder.

I guess that a large amount of people don't care about the thousand and one gaffes and abuse that Trump has admitted too. In the uk he he would have been expelled from either main party for any number of reasons. The admission of the "pussy grabbing" through to mocking the disabled reporter. Yet he still has millions of supporters voting his way.

My theory has often been that the president is a figure head, someone lacking actual power but there to take the congratulations of the efforts of a group of people. The again maybe I am taking Veep as a documentary rather then a very accurately aimed satirical comedy. It also possible that we keep seeing trump making up words while struggling to read out loud from the autocue. Maybe we only see the bad and somewhere there's hundreds of videos of him doing nice things.

Whichever is true , this is the first president I have ever seen constantly vilified in the way, deserving or not. Bush junior was mocked for not being the brightest but in comparison he appears to be a genius. I read that Trumps great selling point was that he wasn't a career politician and nobody was sure how he would be in the White house, surely his record means that he should be evicted quick. Moving a peaceful protest near his big house with armed guards so he could quickly pose outside a church with a bible anyone.

I am not saying my prime minister is brilliant but he's not a patch on the president. The difference is that the president either is or thinks he is fireproof. Both before and after the election he seemed to think he could say or do anything and it wouldn't matter. He was at least partially right as he got elected and is close for a second bout.

I haven't written to much about his opponent as he hasn't come up on the uks radar to much, which in comparison must be a good thing. His basic policy seems to be to try not to say anything to silly or say anything too silly. Something he has just about managed to achieve. His billboards and posters could have just said "its ok, I'm not him". As I write Biden is very close to being president while his defeated opponent is close to the biggest tantrum ever seen.

Trump has messed up the postal service so ballots are slow, he rushed through a supportive judge for when he appeals the result and still he gest votes. I still don't get how having the most money is the route to being the most powerful person in the world. I also find it quite bizarre Trump lost by nearly 3 million votes last time and still won the race.

I do like the fixed terms served and the time restraints, there's a few times it would have helped here. Running campaigns around whose going to die of old age first or whose going to make the silliest comment is quite bizarre though. Surely look at the covid deaths and that surely should be enough to choose someone else. Anyone should be able to do better, also not making up cures and saying he's winning in the race for a cure as the death rate increases should be his epitaph on his presidency.

This isn't supposed to be one sided, its just the perception given by British and American media on the candidates. I have heard covid experts being told they know nothing for example, i have listened to political commentators talking on numerous issues and I still cant understand why this hasn't been a landslide defeat.

Maybe its time for American's to invoke a none of the above protest, try and get 2 politicians at least in the running. Better still get 3 or 4 viable options. Bring in a financial cap on running costs for the campaigns and you will get more choice. At present I am looking towards President the rock in a few years, not sure that's who I would want in charge personally.
