The Nation that Cried Wolf
We have become a nation that caters to people’s individual feelings rather than what is best for society as a whole. Television shows have been removed because someone didn’t like what the writers had to say. Songs have been removed from the radio because someone dared say God's name in their lyrics. A cross was torn down. A monument removed. Millions of people were robbed of an experience because a few objected. This nation has come to use words like rape, racist, fascist, supremacy, and injustice with such frequency that the words and their meaning have lost their bite. I am ALWAYS on the side of a rape victim. A real rape victim. The trouble is, if a woman is yelling rape in today’s society, nobody even turns around. I, like many other people in this world, assume someone is trying to get attention at the cost of someone else. Retaliation is often the cause, a spurned lover that didn’t fully comprehend the meaning of the words “side chick.” He declines to carry on the relationship. She is going to make sure he pays for it. This entire populous is out for self, and it seems everyone wants to be famous, if only for two fleeting minutes. What people fail to realize is that when you get your two minutes of fame, nobody really cares. Honestly, you are simply the cause of the day, the latest meme or a video that makes it to viral status. If anyone remembers your name, it will be when an old YouTube video comes on and something like, “I remember this idiot” will be what is said in households across America. These stories are the impetus for this piece.

Granville T. Woods, Thomas L. Jennings, Mark E. Dean, Charles Richard Drew, Jan Ernst, Mary Kenner, Alice Parker, and sisters Ruane and Sheila Lynn Jeter. Any idea what those people have in common? How about if I say Benjamin Solomon Carson? Still nothing? They are all black individuals that were imperative in leading the lifestyle we lead now. I was thinking, why is it that our youth knows who Lil’ Wayne is but don't have a clue what Jan Ernst did for this world? Without each of them, our world would not be so easy. The device that you are reading this piece on you can thank Mark E. Dean for. He was the mastermind behind the color computer monitor and holds several patents for the systems we use today. Thank Jan Ernst for the kicks you have on your feet and Ruane Jeter for your toast in the morning. Why is it that our youth know who Danielle Bregoli is but have no clue that Thomas L. Jennings was the first black man to receive a patent?

The United Kingdom’s European Union departure took yet another hit last night as Theresa May’s Brexit deal received its expected heavy defeat in the MP’s vote. Before this vote, the Prime Minster suggested to MP’s that it was her deal—no deal or no Brexit. Now it looks as though her days could be numbered.

Right now, as I write, it is ten days into the new year of 2019 in New York City, a city so nice that you want a slice (of pizza, of course). We have so many activities going on here that it is almost a shame to see a CLOSED sign at the end of the business day. Without us, the world would come to a screeching stop. We have the entertainment, sports, businesses, schools, and so many other interests of the world right here in our back and front yards.

The AOC Wave Is Here
"Don't hate me cause you ain't me, fellas." Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez-Cortez wrote on Twitter after another faux scandal erupted around her (more on that later). The freshmen representative from the Bronx is not an average politician and is shaking things up in a way that has upset a great deal of people that have been around longer and think they know better. There is an effort underway to get AOC, as she is known on Twitter, under control and to follow the protocol. Another goal may be to dull the influence that she has, but nothing has worked and hopefully, it never does.

Skyler SaundersPublished 5 years ago in The SwampShowcasing School Shooters
Mass shootings have unfortunately become a tragic, but normalized part of our society. Although mass shootings only make up a small portion of the total gun crimes in this country, they only continue to rise in numbers with each attack becoming more brutal than the last. We are all completely aware of the pain that these tragedies can bring to our communities, and yet, they continue to happen. The stories pass through the news channels so quickly, replaced with the new horror story while the last fades away into a bad memory for our country. There are no opportunities for new reform from our legislators, despite the constant push from the citizens that want change. These attacks of terrorism have become something that we simply acknowledge, move on from, and wait for the next inevitable occurrence.

So today marks day 23 of the ongoing government shutdown. Yesterday was the first time furloughed government employees didn't receive a paycheck. Even if the government opened back up tomorrow morning, they still wouldn't see that money in their accounts for another two weeks.

Bryan Watch: January Weeks 1 and 2 Back in the early 2000's, I kept a close watch on Congressman Paul Ryan’s voting record under the label “Ryan Watch.” It fell by the wayside once he became speaker. But now that Wisconsin’s First Congressional District has a new congressman, Bryan Steil, it seems like a good time to begin looking at Congress again.
John HeckenlivelyPublished 5 years ago in The SwampThe Role of Social Sciences in History
The roles that the social sciences have within history are more important that one would have considered when attempting to define the word history. For the layman, they would consider history to be a compilation of dates, facts, and artifacts. Yet, the social sciences are tied into those dates, facts, and artifacts, and in such a way that the layman would once again avoid any appreciation for the art. Historians easily fall into the role of social sciences. This essay is going to be covering three different social science perspectives. The first deals with history anthropologically, this is covered by Edward Said, who discusses how the hegemonic impacts in Orientalism. The second is E.P. Thompson, with his sociological approach on classes. The third covered is the topic of historical materialism covered by Marx and Engels.
New Age Thoughts ChicagoPublished 5 years ago in The SwampIdealism
Idealism gets promoted as a basis for the electorate to choose who to vote for, but is this sensible? It tends to be accepted by younger voters, who are not yet disillusioned by history.
