Current reports suggest that hundreds of Palestinians and Israelis have lost their lives, while thousands have been injured, suffering a range of injuries from minor wounds to severe trauma.

In the case of Palestine, however, the urgent need for medical attention overwhelms an already strained healthcare system. Historically, the Israel-Palestine conflict has taken a heavy toll on the health of the Palestinian population, particularly those residing in Gaza. Lack of adequate healthcare resources and infrastructure compounds the suffering of innocent civilians, underscoring the importance of addressing their healthcare needs. Gaza, subjected to an Israeli-Egyptian blockade for an extended period, suffers acutely from a severe shortage of essential medical supplies and equipment. It's essential to highlight that even before this latest escalation in violence, Gaza's healthcare system was grappling with significant challenges. Approximately 48% of essential medicines and 26% of vital medical disposables were either entirely unavailable or in critically short supply. Regrettably, the access to mental health services and support remains limited, worsening the psychological burden on the population. This crisis disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, including women, children, and the elderly. Women often encounter difficulties in accessing essential maternal and child health services, a critical concern given the unique healthcare needs during pregnancy and early childhood. Children, on the other hand, grapple with severe psychological trauma as a result of their exposure to the protracted conflict. The elderly, who may already face mobility issues, confront additional challenges in accessing healthcare services, leaving them particularly vulnerable in this healthcare crisis.

In response to the ongoing emergency situation in Gaza, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) has taken immediate action to support the beleaguered healthcare system. Their dedicated team on the ground in Gaza is releasing all of their pre-positioned medical supplies, valued at approximately $570,000 USD (around £465,000). This critical initiative aims to ensure that hospitals and emergency responders have the necessary resources to cope with the unprecedented influx of casualties resulting from the recent escalation in violence. Amidst the rising tensions in Gaza, Doctors Without Borders has also taken note of the critical importance of preserving healthcare facilities as sanctuaries for the injured and ill. The humanitarian group issued a plea on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the need for healthcare facilities to remain protected zones.
