England Has Fallen

The disaster film we all live in...

True to form I find myself thinking about the state of the country through a rather melodramatic lense (hence the movie inspired title). In my mind I see a country ripped apart by politice and social confusion over what is best for the country; the old fear the young for the violence they create, while the young hate the old for draining the countries economic resources and helping to destroy the environment. The rich get richer by ensuring politicians remain in power and protect their assets, while the poor are left to rot in the streets, while the rest are told to solve the problem themselves. Then there is the never ending dispute over how people should live their lives: "be proud of who you are", but "don't be too gay, straight, white, black, old, young, sexually ambiguous, prudish..." and the list goes on. Although thats a very bleak and narrow view of the overal state of the country, it isn't incorrect.

Brexit Means Brexit...

This is where it all started... again. One question, asked by a rather spineless man "do we leave the European Union or not?". From this came the torrent of lies and conflicting facts - multiple parties hoping to be right, two sides hoping to convince an instantly divided country that they were right. Once the result was revealed, we'd be leaving the EU, of course there were conflicting reactions, half the country were pleased, while the others were annoyed. Then came years of arguing and protests; the government now telling us that the vote was fairly cast (true, yet it was still pretty evenly split so not sure how they weren't surprised half the country would be annoyed).

Now, the deadline has officially passed - we're in talks to leave the EU, still unsure as to what that means or how it will affect us or the countries still in the EU. Like many newsworthy topics, now that it is no longer featured heavily on our screens, we have all stopped talking about it. But that doesn't mean we haven't been affected by it further.

Make Britain Great Again...

Alot of what drove the Brexit vote was the rhetoric of improving the borders and who entered and lived in the country. Spurred on by a bigotted rich man (who I refuse to name), many of the country's angry and racist citizens voted with the intention of getting rid of England's non-white and non-british residents. Obviously, they got their wish (to an extent) however, what has now happened in the increase in hate crimes. Seeing as there have been no obvious actions to "kick" people out of the country, some people have taken matters into their own hands and started attacking people of colour, people from other countries who aren't inherintly of colour, people wearing hijabs, and anyone who isn't white and British.

So what has been the reaction. The government is astonished that this is happening, speeches have gone out wondering how the country was divided so significantly. Also not helped by the reduction of budgets for the police to help deal with the increase in hate crimes. However, the sheer arrogance of the Government to not take any credit for inspiring this explosion of aggression and fear is ridiculous.

Money, Money, Money...

Like the police, many of our greatest assets (emergency care, education & social care) have had their budgets cut back to the bare minimum. Since Brexit we have since a decline in our police forces, teaching staff are quitting at an astonishing rate, and people are suffering with more mental health issues that ever before. And why? because the government (annoyingly voted in through the same lies as Brexit) are so unwilling to help the people who put them there so that they can continue to line their own pockets and protect and increase the pockets of the already super-wealthy who helped the politicians get to where they are.

Our country is ruled only by the amount of money that you have in your bank account or the position you hold in the world. At some point I can see us becoming the twin of America, where every aspect of life is privatised, with the wealthy making a quick buck off us. Maybe this is the post-Brexit world we will have once the Government eventually agree whatever they're discussed with the EU.

Who Will Save Us...

At the end of the day we're unquestionably screwed which ever way you look at it. As someone who has been forced into a post-brexit world by a generation who won't live through it, having to hold the weight of student fees that were unfairly thrust on me by the party that said they wouldn't, and still hated just because I happen to love men, you can see why I look on with pessimism.

However, there is still hope. The power of change is in our hands as much as it is in the governments. At the end of the day, we put them there and have just as much power to take them out. Will it be difficult? Of course it will, change doesn't come to those who wait. We have to take action and force their hands. Otherwise, the England we know and love with indeed fall.
