Painting the equipment in a new color is a good way to refresh the interior. Furniture painting can unearth the hidden potential of your old furniture and completely change the character of the interior. In addition, the use of paint for furniture is a low-budget solution, thanks to which you can save a lot. But if you want to avoid disappointment, you have to choose the right product. Check which furniture paint is best for different surfaces. Choose good quality products and never wonder what to use to paint your furniture.

Types of paint for furniture

Manufacturers offer several types of furniture paint, either for a delicate refresh or for a complete change of the piece. However, not all available products are suitable for all surfaces. You have to take this into account when buying one. If you are wondering what to use to paint furniture, you have to think about the result you want to achieve.

There are many types of furniture paint on the market. They differ by their ingredients and qualities. Garden furniture paint is a completely different type of product than children's furniture paint. Durability and the content of potentially harmful substances are key in this case.

If you are wondering how to paint furniture, pay attention to the fact that, for example, garden furniture made from pallets has to be resistant to weather conditions, such as UV rays and temperature changes. As for the furniture used in a teenager's or child's room, it must be resistant to scratches, which are easily produced during games. Therefore, the painting of the furniture is of fundamental importance in this case.

• Acrylic paint - the acrylic resin acts as a binder here, while the water is the diluent. Because of that, this kind of furniture paint dries quickly and the smell is relatively weak. They give a satin, semi-gloss or high gloss finish. The surface is quite susceptible to physical damage, however it is weather resistant. It is resistant to UV light, so its color will not change in the future. This furniture paint is good for painting objects covered with veneer.

• Oil intura (alkyd paint) - its main ingredients are alkyd resin and oils, thanks to which the paint is weather resistant. Surfaces covered with furniture oil paint are resistant to physical damage, water and temperature.

Its biggest drawback is the acrid smell of the fumes.

• Chalk paint - is made of water, chalk powder, and some pigment. Due to the simplicity of its composition, you can easily prepare this type of paint at home. Provides a matte finish, dries quickly, and is odorless. Furniture chalk paint is environmentally friendly and therefore suitable for children's bedrooms. It is not resistant to physical damage or weathering, so it must be coated with an additional layer of varnish or wax. Chalk paint is perfect for furniture decorating techniques.

• Stains and varnishes - if you want to bring out the pattern of the wood, the most suitable products are varnishes and stains. The dye can be colored, but it does not cover the natural pattern. Depending on the type of product, varnishes and stains can give a matte, semi-gloss or gloss finish. The water-based varnish does not smell and dries quickly, however it can be easily damaged. Alternatively, you can use polyurethane varnish, but keep in mind that it may darken over time.

• Renovation paint - such paints are produced specifically for furniture renovation. They are suitable for wood, laminate and plywood, as well as ceramic tiles. This type of furniture paint is highly resistant to any type of damage. The biggest downside to using them is that they take a long time to dry (even 12 hours). They should be applied at least twice.

• Chalkboard paint - surfaces painted with chalkboard paint are suitable for chalk writing. They can be cleaned with dry or damp cloths. They can be a good idea to paint children's furniture. The table or cabinet door painted with it will make a great writing surface for a child.

How to paint furniture - before you start

Before starting the renovation, one must prepare everything accordingly. Pull out each drawer and unscrew each knob, handle, and hinge. All surfaces must be clean and dry. They should be sanded down - this will ensure that the paint has a proper grip. Use sandpaper or a sanding sponge, which is easier to work with.

Before covering the object with furniture paint, all surfaces should be checked for scratches and dents. Shallow scratches can be easily sanded down. Deep cracks and holes should be filled with wood putty. Covering such flaws with furniture paint could highlight them.

If the surface is smooth, it must be dusted with a damp cloth. Some materials, especially solid wood, require the use of a primer. It should also be used under certain types of paint, such as acrylic.

Furniture painting techniques - quick renovation

To paint the furniture, use a short-haired roller. To access hard-to-reach places, you can use a small brush. For satisfactory results and a durable surface, be sure to cover each object with a minimum of two coats of paint. Wait adequate time between painting each coat. Also, you can lightly sand the dry layer before applying the next one - the paint will stick better.

The shelf life of the result depends primarily on the paint used on the furniture, which must be selected specifically for the given purpose. Furniture such as shelves, shelves, TV stands and sideboards hardly move. Therefore, a less durable paint can be chosen for them, such as acrylic paint and chalk paint. If the renovated objects are going to be in the garden, kitchen or children's room, it is worth choosing a product with a firmer finish. The best paint for furniture in these cases is one that is resistant to physical damage.

If the refurbished object is going to be in a child's room, make sure that the product you are using is safe. Furniture covered with strong-smelling paint must be aired out before it can be placed in the room.

Aside from using furniture paint, take care of the details as well. Damaged handles and knobs must be replaced with new ones. Well-designed handles or knobs will enhance the item's appearance and serve as additional decoration. A good idea is to place color handles that contrast with the rest of the furniture. This will energize the entire room.

When choosing the best paint for furniture, one should think about the finish that will be the most appropriate for the interior. Glossy, glossy surfaces will make the room appear larger, while matte furniture is associated with elegance and simplicity.

If the object is made of solid wood, consider leaving it in its original color. All you need to do in such a case is to varnish the surface. For an interesting effect, you can also combine two different textures. To do this, paint only part of the object and varnish the rest, making the original wood pattern visible.

All purpose furniture paint - white

A good number of apartments are furnished with antique sheet metal furniture. It may be dated, but many items still have interesting shapes. The usual colors of these objects range from dark brown to orange brown. These shades are very old-fashioned, as they tend to overwhelm the entire interior. For this reason, when you refinish your furniture, consider choosing bright colors. White is the most versatile color, it is always in fashion. The benefit of choosing white for interior design is to make rooms appear larger.

Bright tones fit into many designs, for example, they currently dominate the style of modern decoration. This type of interior design often combines whites and shades of gray.

If the modern interior design seems too gloomy, you must not do without elegant whites. Perhaps it is inspired by the French style of Provence, which is much cozier than modern. This type is perfect for updated furniture. It's common for this design to be distressed - such an effect is easy to recreate with furniture chalk paint.

Keep in mind that even the best furniture paint will not be able to cover the entire surface in one coat. If you paint dark furniture white, be sure to apply at least three coats of the product. If you put less, the dark color can cut through the bright paint.

If you're going for a worn-in look that's characteristic of Shabby Chic, choose a dark color as your base. The next layers should be brighter. When the paint is completely dry, lightly sand the edges to bring out the dark color.

Painting old furniture is a great way to freshen up a space. When the objects around you become boring, furniture painting is very helpful. It will give your furniture a new look without spending money on new items. Such a solution is fast and relatively cheap.

Does furniture always have to be sanded?

Getting rid of old layers of varnish or paint is necessary for all types of furniture. Only furniture chalk paint can be used without thoroughly sanding the surface, but the surface still needs to be sanded. Otherwise, the paint may not adhere properly.

Can I paint all kinds of furniture?

Regardless of the type or color of the surface, there is a product for each of them. There is a wide variety of furniture paint on the market, for each type of furniture. The only thing to take into account is the correct preparation of the painted surface.

How long will the surface last?

The durability of the surface depends on the type of paint on the furniture and how the object is used. For example, chalk paint should not be used on kitchen cabinets. If the paint is naturally less durable, it should be secured with an additional coat of varnish.
