With the recent release of Thirteen Reasons Why season 2 and the end of mental health awareness week, the subject of depression, among other things, has unsurprisingly been occupying my mind. What got me wanting to write about it was a conversation I had recently with a friend of mine, triggered by the subject of 13 Reasons Why, and how it portrays suicide and mental health issues. We both agreed that turning suicide into a revenge complex, as the show does, is neither a reasonable, realistic, or healthy way to portray the issue. As someone who has struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts, I can tell you that suggesting killing oneself is a good way of getting back at the people who hurt you is not at all helpful. It's the opposite. This turns suicide into a trivial game of blaming others, and there has even been concerns that a suicide numbers among teens will increase due to the amount of people who identify with Hannah's situation and will see death as a viable way of making people care about them.

13 Reasons Why has taken over the internet. The teenage population has fallen in love with the series and the characters. They want their friends to watch it, they think it's an awareness of suicide and bullying, but honestly there are so many things wrong with this show and there are so many reasons why I won't watch it. I understand as this show takes over the internet, my opinion seems to be pretty rare and confusing to the outside world, so I'd like to give a little intel into what problems I see with this show. Granted my opinions are based on trailers and the reviews of others and I have not seen the show yet, but bare with me.

I have a lot of feelings about the new Netflix show, 13 Reasons Why. As a middle schooler, I read the novel by Jay Asher and fell in love with it. Hannah was likeable, a little dramatic, but relatable as a 13 year old who thought middle school was hard. I never gave too much thought to the plot but ravaged through the book in about a couple of hours and decided that I liked it, but never dove too deep into the heavy subjects brought up. I was fortunate to have never experienced super similar things to what Hannah went through in the book and had not yet felt the same things she was feeling.
