The Debate

By: Chauntelle A

A sticky and humid night in Charlotte added to what was becoming a very tense moment as the group of friends engaged in a heated discussion about the best song to represent their LGBTQQIAAP community dance. Patria is the feisty self-appointed leader, leaning into the table from which they were sitting around. The table wobbled, Patria says, " okay people we've been sitting here for an hour, we're not getting anywhere we need to come up with a theme song for the dance." Patri says., “I think it should be Hopeless Romantic by Tink ''.

"This is the perfect song for the stage of love most are at, because they still have this romanticised idea of what love is. Remember when you asked, will you ever find it? '' Also, I just like this song," Patria continued. Dane interrupted her. "Honey, that song is cute, but we don't want the night to be called hopeless romantic. That's the wrong move for a preteen dance. We need something fun, we need something upbeat. Let's give them a flashback moment, how about, Back to Life by Soul II Soul."

“Some of these children are choosing to live two separate lives, and that's what this song represents. Going back to the life you want to live versus the life you have to live just to make it through the day. Some of these children are choosing to live separate lives. That's what this song represents: going back to the life you want to live versus the life you have to live just to make it through the day.” Martin says, “I like where you're going with the old school thing. I even like that big idea. But I think a better song is, Stir It Up by Patti LaBelle.“

Shannon replied, "I like the idea of an eighties themed party. I think if we chose the seventies it would be more fun, we could take it all the way and just make it a seventies party and it could be a, it could be a total vibe. Why not use the song, Spoiled by your like by Anita Ward?"

Calvin added, “Please stop. That era is annoying. But that is a cute idea. How about Let's go the inspirational route and go with, I will not be silenced by Jonathan David Helser.”

Matti jumps in replying, “We get it you're a minister, but that is not what we're going for today, or at least for this dance. How about keeping the power and I don't know maybe use the music. They listen to now and artists that they enjoy, let's go with the song, This is me by The Greatest Showman Cast.”

Matti continued, “It's an empowering song, but it's also from the newer generation. Patri, I'm still liking the idea of romance. How about every use, I chose you by Kiana Lede.”

“If The kids were a little older maybe, but they need an empowerment song like Mary J. Blige song Stronger,” Jason entered the conversation.

“Or we could choose Confident by Justin Bieber featuring Chance the Rapper,” Calvin suggested.

“You know if you want to go the confident route choose Brand New Me by Alicia Keys,” he continues.

“Let's go with a Beyonce song you can never go wrong with queen bey. I still love that Grown Woman song and it represents a segment with the LGBTQQIAAP community,” Shannon says.

“But these are kids that won't work. Let's go with Equal by Hello Sunday. it's of their generation and a great song,” says Martin .”
