Heteroflexible - What Is That?
Explaining what Heteroflexible means
What the Heck Does Heteroflexible Mean?
Some people are familiar with the term, and some aren't. Firstly, yes, the term "heteroflexible" is a real word in the English language. Obviously, it came about only in the last decade or so, but it is a real word. No, it's not one of the made up terms that the Gen Z LGBTQ community has invented either. The alphabet mafia didn't come up with this one.
The simplest way to explain or summarize what heteroflexible means is to say that it is someone who is straight, but hasn't entirely ruled out being with someone of the same gender. I guess you could also say that it is someone who is basically 95% or more straight, but has some tendencies that lean toward the possibility of being with someone who is not the opposite gender. That's the meaning of "heteroflexible" in a nutshell, really.
Difference Between Heteroflexible & Bisexual?
The most common and perhaps even most obvious questions is often, is there a difference between heteroflexible and bisexual then? The short answer is, yes, there is a very real and distinct difference between the two.
A person who is bisexual is usually equally attracted to both genders and considers both men and women a candidate for a potential romantic or sexual relationship. A heteroflexible person would never consider the two genders an equal possibility, but hasn't ruled out the same gender for sure.
To help you understand as easily and best as I can, let's imagine a scenario. The scenario is this: A man or woman is standing around and trying to start something up with someone of the opposite gender. Just then someone who is the same gender as this person (our main character) walks and and the person they are talking to takes an obvious notice of this new person...
Our main character who was talking to them looks over and looks the new person, of the same gender, up and down. The difference is...
- A straight person = "That person is going to be competition."
- A bisexual person = "Wow, I'd date them too" or "Why? That person isn't even attractive."
- A heteroflexible person = "I can see why they would be interested." But still fully prefers the person of the opposite gender they were talking to.
Hopefully, that helps you to understand and see the difference and doesn't just confuse you even more. The truth is, when you put it down in written form, it often seems more complicated than it really is.
Mislabeling Due to Modern Political Climates
Now, let's quickly talk about the elephant in the room. Are there people walking around who are mislabeling themselves? Yes. Are there people walking around who are being mislabeled by others? Yes. Of course, there is no real way of proving it without entering into peoples minds, but I personally suspect that there are many people claiming to be bisexual because it better gets them into the "club" socially, but are actually more heteroflexible than anything. People who claim to be bisexual to fit in, but in practice and reality would never truly date the same gender and expect it to last. Truthfully, I could name some YouTubers who fit this to a tee, in my opinion.
It is also obvious that there are more women who claim being bisexual who are actually heteroflexible at most, than there are men. This is probably because when a woman says she is bisexual, people think she is bisexual. When a man says he is bisexual, people think he is gay. Neither of these are true, of course. It's just a social double standard. One of many that men face in today's world.
Conclusion
Truth is, we are seeing a lot of people publicly starting to backpedal their "labels" anyway, but there are several who simply don't know themselves well enough yet to know what to call themselves. People today, and especially newer generations, have an overwhelming need to label themselves as something, often thinking that it will define who they are. It doesn't. You are who you are. Labels are a social invention that will never change your reality. You live and you learn... and eventually, you drop the labels and just become you. That's you ever had to be in the first place... you. You are enough.
Before I leave you, I do want to mention that when you are younger... it is actually perfectly normal to do a little bit of experimenting. That doesn't define your sexuality either. Experimenting is a part of life... not a rule or law for your whole life.
