“Embrace your uniqueness. 🌈 To Youth!”

A Letter to Our Queer Youth

In the whispers of the night, Underneath the rainbow's light, You stand tall, brave and true, In a world that questions you.

Your heart beats a rhythm rare, A symphony of love and care, For you are the colors bold, In a tale that's often told.

Through shadows dark and deep, Your spirit soars, your soul does leap, Defying norms with every stride, In your truth, you do confide.

Oh, queer youth, shine bright and clear, Your presence, a testament dear, To love's enduring, boundless grace, In every corner, every place.

This letter penned, with love so true, Is a pledge to stand with you, In unity, hand in hand, Together, we'll make our stand.

A Letter of Hope to Queer Youth in Sri Lanka

Dear Queer Youth of Sri Lanka,

In our island nation, where tradition meets modernity, your journey to self-acceptance is both courageous and inspiring. As a social worker deeply committed to advocating for LGBTIQ rights, I stand in solidarity with you amidst the challenges we face together.

Navigating Challenges with Courage

In Sri Lanka, archaic colonial-era laws such as Sections 365 and 365A of the Penal Code still criminalize same-sex relations. These laws not only restrict your freedom to love openly but also perpetuate stigma and discrimination. Despite these legal barriers, your resilience in navigating societal norms and embracing your identity is a testament to your strength.

The Role of Activism: Organizations Like Equal Ground

Amidst these challenges, organizations like Equal Ground play a pivotal role in advocating for change. Founded in 2004, Equal Ground has been a beacon of hope for the LGBTIQ community in Sri Lanka. They tirelessly work on legal reform, awareness campaigns, and providing support services to those in need. Their advocacy efforts extend beyond policy changes to foster a more inclusive society where everyone can live with dignity and respect.

Global Attention, Local Impact

The international community's attention through Resolution 46/1 underscores the urgency of our cause. This global spotlight not only holds our government accountable but also amplifies the voices of local activists and organizations like Equal Ground. It strengthens our collective efforts to push for meaningful reforms that uphold human rights for all Sri Lankans.

Progress and Challenges Ahead

Recent developments, including the government's expressed support for a decriminalization bill, offer hope for progress. However, true equality requires sustained advocacy and societal change. We must continue to challenge stigma, educate communities, and build alliances across sectors to create a more inclusive environment for LGBTIQ individuals.

Empowering Queer Youth: Your Strength and Resilience

To the queer youth of Sri Lanka, your journey is marked by courage and authenticity. Embrace who you are with pride, knowing that your voice matters in shaping a brighter future. Your resilience inspires us to push for a society where love is celebrated in all its forms, free from discrimination.

Joining the Dialogue: Letters to Our Queer Youth Challenge

In response to the "Letters to Our Queer Youth" challenge, I invite fellow Sri Lankans and global allies to participate. Let us craft letters of support and solidarity, affirming the right of every young person to love and live authentically. Your words of encouragement can make a profound impact, offering hope to those who may feel isolated or marginalized.

Closing Thoughts

As we reflect on the journey ahead, let us draw strength from our collective resolve and commitment to justice. Organizations like Equal Ground exemplify the power of community and activism in driving social change. Together, we can create a Sri Lanka where diversity is celebrated, and every individual—regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity—can thrive with dignity.
