States That Legalized Marijuana

Medical marijuana is one of the biggest topics in the medical world today, and it's also gaining more traction than ever when it comes to local elections. People are now beginning to vote for politicians who have pro-marijuana beliefs, and they're also voicing their opinion at pro-cannabis rallies.

As a result, states are listening, and there are many states that legalized marijuana... or at least decriminalized it. Today, we're going to celebrate the states that have done the right thing and shown their support for legalization.

Right now, 29 states have legalized marijuana in some way, shape, or form. Here's the scoop on the states with the most cannabis freedom.

Colorado

Few states have shown their support for marijuana legalization like Colorado has — and to a point, that might be why it's one of the first states that legalized marijuana use for medical purposes. As of right now, it's also one of the only states that also decriminalized marijuana for recreational purposes, too.

This might be why "green tourism" has been making Colorado's economy boom, and why so many dispensaries have been making a killing in the West Coast.

California

To a point, this shouldn't shock anyone. California has long been known as a very marijuana-friendly state thanks to the Hippie Counterculture movement of the 60s. This state has decriminalized marijuana use and also has one of the most booming economies for medical marijuana.

This is also one of the few states that legalized marijuana delivery services. So, if you have a prescription card, you're in luck. You can get green right to your door.

By the way, in the state of California, you're also allowed to have up to six mature pot plants in your home — or 12 immature ones — if you have a prescription for them. So, it's also one of the first states to allow growth along with possession, too.

Recreational use is also allowed by state law.

Maine

On the East Coast, Maine leads the pack when it comes to both lobster and medical marijuana. This state allows up to 2.5 ounces of usable weed, and also gives people who need medical marijuana the chance to grow up to six plants in their home.

Many people don't know about the decriminalization of weed in this state, primarily because they assumed that it's a conservative state. Nope! It's been decriminalized for medical purposes since 1999... and it's now generally decriminalized for recreation, too.

Connecticut

Another East Coast state that has legalized marijuana for both recreational and medical purposes is Connecticut. Among states that legalized marijuana use, it's actually one of the most liberal. It's actually only one of a total of two states that legalized marijuana for both purposes on the East Coast.

According to the laws, you can have up to 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana on your person without issue. So, that's actually not that bad a restriction compared to others.

Alaska

Alaska has long been known as a deep red state — which is precisely why it's so shocking to see it on this list. However, the truth remains that it's one of the few states that legalized marijuana for everyone, not just medical marijuana users.

Medical marijuana users can have up to an ounce of usable cannabis on them, and can grow up to three mature plants of their own. However, you probably won't get arrested in this wintery state if they catch you smoking up without a prescription card.

Nevada

Nevada has always had a naturally liberal lean to it. It's the only state in the union to legalize prostitution, and it's now also one of the only states that legalized marijuana for recreational purposes as well.

Residents from Nevada are allowed to have up to 12 plants of their own, or up to 2.5 ounces of usable greens on their person for medical purposes. Green tourism is booming here, and going to Vegas has never looked better.

Washington

The last of all states that legalized marijuana for all purposes that we're going to discuss today is Washington. This West Coast gem of a state has become infamous for their green tourism, and also has been known for its very liberal laws.

Medical marijuana users can have up to eight ounces on their person, or grow up to 12 plants under the current laws. Dispensaries are plentiful here, and frankly, it's a great thing to see.

The cool thing is that these may be the only states that legalized marijuana for all purposes now, but that's not going to be the case for long. Many states are currently making moves to legalize our favorite plant, and that means that cannabis use will be a lot less stigmatized in the future.
