You Think That You Know Sorrow

Believe me when I say you don’t

You Think That You Know Sorrow

You think that you know sorrow,
But I’ve been here before,
I’ve been here when sorrow and tragedy,
Have knocked upon my door.

So don’t tell me what I’m going through,
Or what I have been through,
No, don’t tell me what I’ve been through,
For you haven’t got a clue.

Yes, it’s written on my face,
And I will tell you it’s not been good,
I won’t wrap it up in perfume and lace,
Or pretend I’ve been misunderstood.

My lips are sealed,
Because sometimes things are not nice to see,
And they’re also not nice to tell,
There’ve been parts of my life,
That really have been a living hell.

But down we go and down we fall,
Like Alice down the rabbit hole,
You’ll always find when you go down,
There’s more than meets the eye to be found.

Go down to where lost souls are resting,
Where forgotten memories lie,
Where broken hearts still whisper,
And unanswered questions cry.

Go down where shadows gather,
Where yesterday still weeps,
Where secrets never spoken,
Are buried far too deep.

You’ll find the ones who loved you,
And the ones who walked away,
The faces of forgotten years,
Still waiting for their day.

And there you’ll see my sorrow,
The tears I never cried,
The thousand little pieces,
Of the man I am inside.

For every face within my beard,
Has a story of its own,
Some are faces I remember,
Some are souls I’ve never known.

And if you look into my eyes,
Beyond the pain you see,
You’ll find a thousand yesterdays,
Still living inside me.

And deeper still the silence grows,
Where no one dares to tread,
Where dreams of those who went before,
Still linger with the dead.

I walked among the broken souls,
Who’d lost their will to cry,
And watched them search for yesterday,
Beneath a starless sky.

A woman stood beside a cliff,
Her lover far away,
A thousand miles of emptiness,
Between yesterday and today.

I reached to bring them closer,
But time had sealed their fate,
For some goodbyes are never said,
And some arrive too late.

The faces in my beard are those,
Whose stories I have known,
I carry all their memories,
So none shall walk alone.

And high above a silver bird,
Flew through a troubled sky,
It carried dreams of distant souls,
Who never said goodbye.

So when you see my weary eyes,
Don’t turn your face away,
For I have lived a thousand lives,
And buried yesterday.

My third eye sees beyond the world,
Beyond what you believe,
It sees the hearts that never healed,
And those who cannot grieve.

But don’t mistake my silence,
For a heart that’s turned to stone,
For I have held the hands of those,
Who died afraid, alone.

And when at last you climb again,
From darkness into light,
Remember all the souls you met,
Who never left the night.

For sorrow isn’t always loud,
Sometimes it makes no sound,
It lives behind a stranger’s eyes,
Where broken dreams are found.

And if you ask me who I am,
I’ll answer quietly,
I’m every soul you’ve ever lost,
And all you’ll never see.
