Van Gogh owns the sunflowers

I wonder if I may borrow them

from him for a few moments

especially the ones with big faces

and petals that twist around

as if they were underwater sea creatures

not children of the sun

the sunflower grows

by picking up its own seed

and then tearing it open

with two green wings

the stem must be strong

before its heavy head

can form

The petals even taste yellow

like squash or peppers

I dream of other yellow flowers:

daffodils, black eyed Susans,

and buttercups

Should I leave

the powerful sunflowers

to Vincent

and forge my own way

with buttercups

as proud and fierce

as miniature dogs

or maybe audacious daisies?

A trace of yellow

in the calla lily's grace

Yes, I will get to know

that moment of the flower

before it can be mine
